چکیده

The ability of nonlinear optical phase-conjugate mirrors (PCM's) to correct for linear refractive-index inhomogeneities has been demonstrated both theoretically1'2 and experimentally.2 Propagation media often possess intensity-dependent indices of refraction that cause severe propagation distortion, such as thermal blooming and self-focusing. These distortions are often manifested in high-intensity atmospheric propagation of laser beams, thermally induced lensing within intracavity laser gain media, or high-intensity transmission through optical fibers. In this Letter we extend the distortion-correction proof of Yarivl'2 to media with intensity-dependent indices of refraction.3 A typical geometry is sketched in Fig. 1. We consider a monochromatic electromagnetic field at radian frequency w, which propagates essentially in the +z direction and is given by

Optimal packaging of dispersion-compensating fibers for matched nonlinear compensation and reduced optical noise.

A method of packaging dispersion-compensating fibers (DCFs) is discussed that achieves optimal nonlinearity compensation and a good signal-to-noise ratio simultaneously. An optimally packaged dispersion-compensating module (DCM) may consist of portions of DCFs with higher and lower loss coefficients. Such optimized DCMs may be paired with transmission fibers to form scaled translation-symmetric...

Optical Phase Conjugation for Dispersion and Nonlinearity Compensation in a 1600km, 42 Gb/s Quasi-Lossless System

We experimentally investigate a long-distance, high-bit-rate transmission system which combines optical-phase-conjugation with quasi-lossless amplification. Comparison with a conventional system configuration demonstrates the possibility of obtaining both dispersion compensation and improved nonlinear tolerance using proposed scheme. ©2009 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (060.4510) Optic...

Optical phase conjugation in phase-modulated transmission systems: experimental comparison of different nonlinearity-compensation methods.

We experimentally compare the effectiveness of three different optical-phase-conjugation-based nonlinearity-compensation strategies on a transmission system employing phase-modulated signals, and hence affected by the Gordon-Mollenauer effect. We demonstrate that it is possible to obtain significant nonlinearity compensation, but that no improvement is obtained using configurations specifically...

Compensation of nonlinear phase noise impairments through optical phase conjugation in long-haul transmission systems

Differential-quadrature phase-shift-keying (DQPSK) can, unlike on-off-keying (OOK), be impaired by nonlinear phase noise (NPN). It has been shown that optical phase conjugation (OPC) is an effective compensation scheme for NPN resulting from the ASE of EDFAs (ASE-NPN). In this paper we discuss the influence of NPN resulting from modulator imperfections (MI-NPN). We show that MI-NPN can be compe...

Characteristics of Optical Interconnection for Power Transmission Based on Phase Conjugation Generation by a Ring-Resonator

To establish an interconnection for power transmission between two moving objects, optical phase conjugation is applied for non-mechanical, all-optical tracking and compensation of atmospheric distortions. The installation of the connection starts in sending a coherent pilot signal by the power receiver towards the transmitter. There, the incident light is collected and directed into a nonlinea...
