Prediction of next career moves from scientific profiles

چکیده
Changing institution is a scientist’s key career decision, which plays an important role in education, scientific productivity, and the generation of scientific knowledge. Yet, our understanding of the factors influencing a relocation decision is very limited. In this paper we investigate how the scientific profile of a scientist determines their decision to move (i.e., change institution). To this aim, we describe a scientist’s profile by three main aspects: the scientist’s recent scientific career, the quality of their scientific environment and the structure of their scientific collaboration network. We then design and implement a two-stage predictive model: first, we use data mining to predict which researcher will move in the next year on the basis of their scientific profile; second we predict which institution they will choose by using a novel social-gravity model, an adaptation of the traditional gravity model of human mobility. Experiments on a massive dataset of scientific publications show that our approach performs well in both the stages, resulting in a 85% reduction of the prediction error with respect to the state-ofthe-art approaches.

NEMO: Next Career Move Prediction with Contextual Embedding
With increased globalization and labor mobility, human resource reallocation across firms, industries and regions has become the new norm in labor markets. The emergence of massive digital traces of such mobility offers a unique opportunity to understand labor mobility at an unprecedented scale and granularity. While most studies on labor mobility have largely focused on characterizing macro-le...

Careers in any profession can take a curious path. One small choice can seemingly change a career path and chance encounters open doors to new opportunities that take a person in new, unforeseen directions. For Chris Wylie this has certainly been the case. This interview highlights how someone can build a successful career in science, how that career can be fulfilling and fun and at the same ti...

The study investigated whether there was any significant generic difference between the Research Questions (RQs) and Method sections of applied linguistics research articles (RAs) published in international and local Iranian journals. Two hundred applied linguistics RAs (100 from each group) were selected from 5 SSCI-indexed international journals and 5 Iranian Scientific-Research (Elmi-Pazhouh...
متن کاملI-37: Establishing High Resolution Genomic Profiles of Single Cells Using Microarray and Next-Generation Sequencing Technologies
The nature and pace of genome mutation is largely unknown. Standard methods to investigate DNA-mutation rely on arraying or sequencing DNA from a population of cells, hence the genetic composition of individual cells is lost and de novo mutation in cell(s) is concealed within the bulk signal. We developed methods based on (SNP-) arraying and next-generation sequencing of single-cell whole-genom...
متن کاملMultivariate Feature Extraction for Prediction of Future Gene Expression Profile
Introduction: The features of a cell can be extracted from its gene expression profile. If the gene expression profiles of future descendant cells are predicted, the features of the future cells are also predicted. The objective of this study was to design an artificial neural network to predict gene expression profiles of descendant cells that will be generated by division/differentiation of h...
