چکیده

At a time when Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) professions are in great demand, the question as to how to cultivate learners’ interests in these fields becomes more urgent. This paper presents valuable guidance in building positive mathematics learning experiences among students of all ages. Using effective, enjoyable, and real-life activities, it presents an innovative, research-based, and field-tested model approach to teaching Part-Whole concepts to young children. Building upon extended action research, this project reveals how using a Rekenrek manipulative and Think Aloud strategies, mathematics teachers cultivate not only number sense and arithmetic skills, but also the internalization of essential pre-Algebra concepts. Instructional activities, illustrations, as well as facilitation strategies are described in detail to provide specific examples for instructors to explore. This article describes the research foundation of the models, and a brief theoretical background and history of these approaches. However, the main foci of this paper are the several real-life applications for the math teaching and learning process which emerged. The final section of the article returns to a discussion of the foundational educational principles which undergird the approach and outcomes of these multisensory and manipulative math instructional approaches.

What Makes Mathematics Manipulatives Effective ? Lessons From Cognitive Science and Montessori Education

Manipulatives are ubiquitous in early childhood classrooms; yet, findings regarding their efficacy for learning mathematics concepts are inconsistent. In this article, we present four general principles that have emerged from cognitive science about ways to ensure that manipulatives promote learning when used with young children. We also describe how Montessori instruction offers a concrete exa...

Taking a Hard Look at Concreteness: Do Concrete Objects Help Young Children Learn Symbolic Relations?

concept may be simple and direct but this relation may be, and may reinain, obscure to young children, particularly if the relation is not pointed out explicitly. The second similarity between children's difficulties with our model and with manipulatives is that dual representation is relevant to both. As was true of our model, manipulatives have a dual nature; they are intended to be used as r...

An SVG Based Tool for Plane Geometry and Mathematics Education

Geometry is an important part of mathematics. Described is a Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) based system for teaching and learning geometry and mathematics. The work is part of the WME project for enhancing mathematics education using Web technologies. An SVG library for diagramming and interactive geometry learning is created. Building on this library, a Web-based authoring tool GeoSVG that ma...

Examining the Role of Manipulatives and Metacognition on Engagement, Learning, and Transfer

How does the type of learning material impact what is learned? The current research investigates the nature of students’ learning of math concepts when using manipulatives (Uttal, Scudder, & DeLoache, 1997). We examined how the type of manipulative (concrete, abstract, none) and problem-solving prompt (metacognitive or problem-focused) affect student learning, engagement, and knowledge transfer...

Examining Pictorial Models and Virtual Manipulatives for Third-Grade Fraction Instruction

The purpose of this study was to examine pictorial representations, whether in static or dynamic modalities, and their impact on student learning in a classroom with low-achieving students. The investigation emerged from a classroom teacher’s action research project. During a three-week fraction unit, nineteen third-grade low-achieving students participated in two groups – a Dynamic Virtual Man...
