Numerical Studies of Phase Separation in Models of Binary Alloys and Polymer Blends

چکیده
We review some recent results concerning numerical studies of the CahnHilliard equation in three dimensions to describe the phase separation process in a mixture after a quench within the coexistence curve. We focus on the late time behavior for two experimentally relevant systems: binary alloys and binary polymer blends. We find that, in both systems, dynamical scaling with a time dependent characteristic length R ( t ) holds at sufficiently late times and that the late-time behavior for R(r ) can be described by a modified Lifschitz-Slyozov law: R( t ) = c + d f , where n = 1/3. For polymer mixtures, the independence of the growth law exponent n of the quench temperature is in contradiction with some recent experiments on polymer systems.

Phase-Destabilization Mechanism of Polymer-Modified Bitumens in Quiescent Annealing
Bitumen as a binder in coating and insulating materials is modified with polymers to improve its performance in service conditions. Almost all polymers are incompatible with bitumen, and at high temperatures due to relatively very low viscosity of the bitumen phase, are separated from it. These lead to a considerable limitation in the use and handling of polymer-modified bitumens. An understand...
متن کاملStationary dynamics approach to analytical approximations for polymer coexistence curves.
Phase separation in polymer blends is an important process. However, the compositions of the coexisting phases can only be predicted by numerical methods. We provide simple analytical expressions which serve as good approximations for the compositions after phase separation of binary homopolymer blends. These approximations are obtained by a stationary dynamics approach: we calculate the compos...
متن کاملMorphology and Mechanical Properties Investigation of Binary Polymer Blends Based on PP/SEBS and PP/PC
In this study, eight binary blends of polypropylene (PP)/ poly [styrene-b-(ethylene-co butylene)-b-styrene] tri-block copolymer (SEBS) and polypropylene (PP)/ polycarbonate (PC) were produced at different composition through twin screw extruder. The composition of the minor phases was changed to correlate the morphology and mechanical properties of binary blends (PP/PC and PP/SEBS) through ther...
متن کاملOrganic Semiconductor/Insulator Polymer Blends for High-Performance Organic Transistors
We reviewed recent advances in high-performance organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) based on organic semiconductor/insulator polymer blends. Fundamental aspects of phase separation in binary blends are discussed with special attention to phase-separated microstructures. Strategies for constructing semiconductor, semiconductor/dielectric, or semiconductor/passivation layers in OFETs by blen...
متن کاملRole of covalent bond formation in morphology and properties of PP/PP-g-PS binary blends
PP-g-PS copolymer is a typical compatilizer used in polypropylene and polystyrene immiscible blends. PP-g-PS copolymers with different side chain lengths were synthesized, and their thermal and mechanical properties were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), respectively. The DSC and POM results show ...
