Bounding acoustic layer potentials via oscillatory integral techniques
نویسنده
چکیده
We consider the Helmholtz single-layer operator (the trace of the single-layer potential) as an operator on L2(Γ ) where Γ is the boundary of a 3–d obstacle. We prove that if Γ is C2 and has strictly positive curvature then the norm of the single-layer operator tends to zero as the wavenumber k tends to infinity. This result is proved using a combination of (i) techniques for obtaining the asymptotics of oscillatory integrals, and (ii) techniques for obtaining the asymptotics of integrals that become singular in the appropriate parameter limit. This paper is the first time such techniques have been applied to bounding norms of layer potentials. The main motivation for proving this result is that it is a component of a proof that the combined-field integral operator for the Helmholtz exterior Dirichlet problem is coercive on such domains in the space L2(Γ ).

Condition Number Estimates for Combined Potential Boundary Integral Operators in Acoustic Scattering
ABSTRACT. We study the classical combined field integral equation formulations for time-harmonic acoustic scattering by a sound soft bounded obstacle, namely the indirect formulation due to Brakhage-Werner/Leis/Panič, and the direct formulation associated with the names of Burton and Miller. We obtain lower and upper bounds on the condition numbers for these formulations, emphasising dependence...
متن کاملFast Directional Computation of High Frequency Boundary Integrals via Local FFTs
The boundary integral method is an efficient approach for solving time-harmonic acoustic obstacle scattering problems. The main computational task is the evaluation of an oscillatory boundary integral at each discretization point of the boundary. This paper presents a new fast algorithm for this task in two dimensions. This algorithm is built on top of directional low-rank approximations of the...
متن کاملApproximation of High Frequency Acoustic Wave Surface Integrals
This paper is concerned with the efficient evaluation of some highly oscillatory surface integrals, arising from boundary integral methods for high frequency acoustic scattering in three dimensions. The performance of standard quadrature schemes deteriorates as the frequency of the incident wave increases. We present ideas for improving the evaluation of such highly oscillatory integrals. Intro...
متن کاملUniform Error Bounds of a Finite Difference Method for the Klein-gordon-zakharov System in the Subsonic Limit Regime
We establish uniform error bounds of a finite difference method for the Klein-Gordon-Zakharov (KGZ) system with a dimensionless parameter ε ∈ (0, 1], which is inversely proportional to the acoustic speed. In the subsonic limit regime, i.e. 0 < ε ≪ 1, the solution propagates highly oscillatory waves in time and/or rapid outgoing initial layers in space due to the singular perturbation in the Zak...
متن کاملDelta and gamma oscillations in operculo-insular cortex underlie innocuous cold thermosensation
Cold-sensitive and nociceptive neural pathways interact to shape the quality and intensity of thermal and pain perception. Yet the central processing of cold thermosensation in the human brain has not been extensively studied. Here, we used magnetoencephalography and EEG in healthy volunteers to investigate the time course (evoked fields and potentials) and oscillatory activity associated with ...
