Odds-On Trees

چکیده
Let P : Rd → A be a query problem over Rd for which there exists a data structure S that can compute P(q) in O(log n) time for any query point q ∈ Rd. Let D be a probability measure over Rd representing a distribution of queries. We describe a data structure T = TP,D, called the odds-on tree, of size O(n ) that can be used as a filter that quickly computes P(q) for some query values in Rd and relies on S for the remaining queries. With an odds-on tree, the expected query time for a point drawn according to D is O(H∗ + 1), where H∗ is a lower-bound on the expected cost of any linear decision tree that solves P. Odds-on trees have a number of applications, including distribution-sensitive data structures for point location in 2-d, point-in-polytope testing in d dimensions, ray shooting in simple polygons, ray shooting in polytopes, nearest-neighbour queries in Rd, pointlocation in arrangements of hyperplanes in Rd, and many other geometric searching problems that can be solved in the linear-decision tree model. A standard lifting technique extends these results to algebraic decision trees of constant degree. A slightly different version of odds-on trees yields similar results for orthogonal searching problems that can be solved in the comparison tree model.

Microsite and elevation zone effects on seed pilferage, germination, and seedling survival during early whitebark pine recruitment
Tree recruitment is a spatially structured process that may undergo change over time because of variation in postdispersal processes. We examined seed pilferage, seed germination, and seedling survival in whitebark pine to determine whether 1) microsite type alters the initial spatial pattern of seed caches, 2) higher abiotic stress (i.e. higher elevations) exacerbates spatial distribution chan...
متن کاملPrescribed Fire Effects on Wintering, Bark-Foraging Birds in Northern Arizona
We examined effects of prescribed fire on 3 wintering, bark-foraging birds, hairy woodpeckers (Picoides villosus), pygmy nuthatches (Sitta pygmaea), and white-breasted nuthatches (S. carolinensis), in ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forests of northern Arizona, USA. During winters of 2004–2006, we compared bird density, foraging behavior, and bark beetle activity among burned treatment and unb...
متن کاملChanges of free polyamines in the leaves and stems of ‘Kinnow’ mandarin tree as affected by alternate bearing
In order to investigate the seasonal changes and the possible role of the free polyamines in the leaves and stems on the alternate bearing habit of the ‘Kinnow’ mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco) trees, a comparative study was conducted to analyze the levels of free polyamines (putrescine, spermidine and spermine) in the leaves and stems tissues of “on” and &ldquo...
متن کاملEffectiveness of differing trap types for the detection of emerald ash borer (Coleoptera: Buprestidae).
The early detection of populations of a forest pest is important to begin initial control efforts, minimizing the risk of further spread and impact. Emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire) is an introduced pestiferous insect of ash (Fraxinus spp. L.) in North America. The effectiveness of trapping techniques, including girdled trap trees with sticky bands and purple prism traps, was t...
متن کاملEvaluation of Tree Marking in Persian Ironwood-hornbeam Stands at Bahramnia Forestry Plan and Its Effect on Stand Structure
Tree marking can cause changes in forest. This study aimed to assess tree marking operation and to predict its effect on stand structure of Persian ironwood-hornbeam stands at Bahramnia forestry plan, north of Iran. Therefore 98 trees that were marked in compartment 9 of the mentioned forest in 2017 based on selection system and according to the recent laws of Forests, Range and Watershed Manag...
