Soil Moisture Retrieval from Polarimetric Sar Data: a Short Review of Existing Methods and a New One
نویسندگان
چکیده
Soil moisture retrieval from SAR data is not an easy task, especially in presence of vegetation cover. Accordingly, in recent years several methods for soil-moisture retrieval under vegetation cover have been developed, relying on model-based or hybrid polarimetric targetdecomposition techniques. However, most of these decomposition techniques suffer from the so-called negative-power problem, which is mainly related to poor modelling of surfaceand/or volume-scattering contributions. In this paper we, first, analyse the Polarimetric Two-Scale Two-Component Model and the Iterative Generalized Hybrid Decomposition method, proposing a way to combine the estimation results of the methods so that most vegetation conditions can be accounted for. Then, we introduce a method that tries to solve the case of dominant surface scattering and nonnegligible dihedral scattering, which is the case not covered by the abovementioned model combination. Meaningful estimation results are presented and discussed using polarimetric L-band SAR data of the AgriSAR 2006 campaign.

Polarimetric Sar Model for Soil Moisture Estimation over Vineyards at C-band
In this paper we propose a two-component polarimetric model for soil moisture estimation on vineyards suited for C-band radar data. According to a polarimetric analysis carried out here, this scenario is made up of one dominant direct return from the soil and a multiple scattering component accounting for disturbing and nonmodeled signal fluctuations from soil and short vegetation. We propose a...
متن کاملModified Scattering Decomposition for Soil Moisture Estimation from Polarimetric X-band Data
In this paper, the potential of estimating soil moisture from fully polarimetric X-band SAR data is investigated for the first time. Due to the short wavelength, the Physical Optics model [1] has been chosen for the scattering process representation and a model-based decomposition approach has been used to exploit the polarimetric observable space. For appropriate modelling of the strong cross-...
متن کاملExploring the Validity Range of the Polarimetric Two-scale Two- Component Model for Soil Moisture Retrieval by Using Agrisar Data
The recently proposed polarimetric two-scale twocomponent model (PTSTCM) in principle allows us obtaining a reasonable estimation of the soil moisture even in moderately vegetated areas, where the volumetric scattering contribution is non-negligible, provided that the surface component is dominant and the double-bounce component is negligible. Here we test the PTSTCM validity range by applying ...

The improvements of polarimetric SAR data inversion algorithms are discussed and presented. The confounding influence of roughness and vegetation cover on the estimation of the soil moisture contents are considered in the inversion algorithm that estimates moisture content and roughness parameters simultaneously from the pertinent combination of polarization measurements. The estimation of soil...

Danish polarimetric SAR data have been applied t o estimate soil moisture (SM). The preliminary results evaluated with the Land C-band SAR dat,a acquired at the Danish test site Foulum during a number of missions in 1994 and 1995 are presented. In situ data have been collected during the SAR missions and the variations of SM at field scale are discussed. The Integral Equation El]. In addition, ...
