The Expected Rate of Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows In Supernova Searches

چکیده

We predict the rate at which Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) afterglows should be detected in supernova searches as a function of limiting flux. Although GRB afterglows are rarer than supernovae, they are detectable at greater distances because of their higher intrinsic luminosity. Assuming that GRBs trace the cosmic star formation history and that every GRB gives rise to a bright afterglow, we find that the average detection rate of supernovae and afterglows should be comparable at limiting magnitudes brighter than K = 18. The actual rate of afterglows is expected to be somewhat lower since only a fraction of all γ–ray selected GRBs were observed to have associated afterglows. However, the rate could also be higher if the initial γ–ray emission from GRB sources is more beamed than their late afterglow emission. Hence, current and future supernova searches can place strong constraints on the afterglow appearance fraction and the initial beaming angle of GRB sources. Subject headings: gamma rays: bursts

Snapshot Identification of Gamma Ray Burst Optical Afterglows

Gamma ray burst afterglows can be identified in single epoch observations using three or more optical filters. This method relies on color measurements to distinguish the power law spectrum of an afterglow from the curved spectra of stars. Observations in a fourth filter will further distinguish between afterglows and most galaxies up to redshifts z ≈ 1. By allowing faster identification of opt...

Orphan Afterglows of Collimated Gamma-ray Bursts: Rate Predictions and Prospects for Detection

We make a quantitative prediction for the detection rate of orphan gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows as a function of flux sensitivity in X-ray, optical, and radio wavebands, based on a recent model of collimated GRB afterglows. We find that the orphan afterglow rate strongly depends on the opening angle of the jet (roughly ∝ θ−2 jet ), as expected from simple geometrical consideration, if the t...

Theoretical Implications of the Gamma-Ray Burst – Supernova Connection

Although observations of circumstellar shock interactions around supernovae are generally consistent with a ρ ∝ r wind surrounding the progenitor star, this is not true for GRB (gamma-ray burst) afterglows. However, GRB 991208 and GRB 000301C may be consistent with wind interaction if the injection particle spectrum is a broken power law. Circumstellar dust echos can place constraints on supern...

Evidence for Supernova light in all Gamma-Ray Burst afterglows

We present an update of our systematic analysis of all Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) afterglow data, now published through the end of 2004, in an attempt to detect the predicted supernova light component. We fit the observed photometric light curves as the sum of an afterglow, an underlying host galaxy, and a supernova component. The latter is modeled using published UBV RI light curves of SN 1998bw as...

A Systematic Analysis of Supernova Light in Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows

We systematically reanalyzed all Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) afterglow data published through the end of 2002, in an attempt to detect the predicted supernova light component and to gain statistical insight on its phenomenological properties. We fit the observed photometric light curves as the sum of an afterglow, an underlying host galaxy, and a supernova component. The latter is modeled using publi...
