Design and Evaluation of Ambient Displays

چکیده
The aim of this thesis is to better support the design and evaluation of ambient displays. The major difficulty is how to evaluate them. For the furtherance of this aim, seven specific questions are raised. The answers to these seven specific questions are based on the four case studies and the relevant literature. In this thesis, first we systematically divide the evaluation of ambient displays into intrusive and non-intrusive evaluations. Intrusive evaluation is where the user is consciously aware of the evaluation experiment. This is not so in non-intrusive evaluation. For each evaluation style, the evaluation dimensions and their related attributes, evaluation criteria and evaluation techniques are accordingly introduced. Specifically, usefulness is the dimension of non-intrusive evaluation, which can be further divided into usability and utility. Usability is also the dimension of intrusive evaluation. Three detailed evaluation criteria for each evaluation style are effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction. A four step process model for the support of the design and evaluation of ambient displays is also developed. This process model is inspired by the iterative life cycle model and combined consideration of human information processing. Furthermore, guidelines for ambient displays are catalogued. The detailed guidelines come from three different sources: first, to filter and adapt guidelines from other domains. Secondly, to catalogue existing guidelines for ambient displays, and thirdly, to formulate new guidelines from four detailed case studies of this thesis. Finally, four detailed case studies are applied to validate the proposed theories.

Closer to You: Reviewing the Application, Design, and Evaluation of Ambient Displays
This paper presents results from a recent literature review on ambient displays. While the main background of the authors is education and technology-enhanced learning, the review starts more generic with a broader view on ambient displays and their interactional, instructional, and informational characteristics. Beside depicting characteristics and classifying prototypical designs, the review ...
متن کاملInput Step Output
Unlike mainstream information visualization, ambient displays do not require active attention, which makes existing information visualization design and evaluation methodologies not readily applicable. In this paper, we present a new evaluation methodology for ambient displays. The methodology is then applied to a real-world case study, focusing on the effectiveness, efficiency, comprehension a...
متن کاملUnderstanding Aural Fluency in Auditory Display Design for Ambient Intelligent Environments
This paper presents the design and some evaluation results from the auditory display model of an ambient intelligent game named socio-ec(h)o. socio-ec(h)o is played physically by a team of four, and displays information via a responsive environment of light and sound. Based on a study of 56 participants involving both qualitative and preliminary quantitative analysis, we present our findings to...

1. Executive summary The term ambient display has been used in a number of different ways. Here we use Manko's definition: " Ambient display is the use of aesthetically pleasing displays of information which sit on the periphery of a user's attention " [2]. Ambient display resides in the environment of the user rather than on the screen of a desktop computer. It has the ambitious goal of presen...
متن کاملIntrusive and Non-intrusive Evaluation of Ambient Displays
This paper addresses two problems: “What are the appropriate methods for evaluating information systems?” and “How do we measure the impact of ambient information systems?” Inspired by concepts in the social and behavioral science, we categorize the evaluation of ambient displays into two styles: intrusive and nonintrusive. Furthermore, two case studies are used to illustrate these two evaluati...
