چکیده

This paper discusses and criticizes Segal’s 1989 argument against singular object-dependent thoughts. His argument aims at showing that object-dependent thoughts are explanatorily redundant. My criticism of Segal’s argument has two parts. First, I appeal to common anti-individualist arguments to the effect that Segal’s type of argument only succeeds in establishing that object-dependent thoughts are explanatorily redundant for those aspects of subjects’ behaviour that do not require reference to external objects. Secondly, Segal’s view on singular thoughts is at odds with his view on the semantics of proper names, which favours the singularity and object-dependency of the truth-conditions of sentences in which they occur. In particular, his views are at odds with a position he holds, that truth-conditional semantics can adequately account for all aspects of speakers’ linguistic competence in the use of proper names. Reference failure seems problematic because of the conflict between two requirements. On the one hand, there are requirements on the singularity and object-dependency of the truth-conditions of sentences with proper names. On the other hand, there are requirements on behavioural and psychological explanation, motivated by a strong intuition that people nonetheless understand utterances of sentences with vacuous terms, namely proper names: they take those sentences to have a truth-value and use them to express their beliefs, thoughts, desires, etc. The first requirement is often formulated in terms of thought expression. The Argument of Possibility and necessity encountering the critiques of Russell, Hume, and Kant

The argument of possibility and necessity- which is considered as some of the most important arguments in proving the existence of God - have taken a key place in humanschr('39') thoughts. In history, among thinkers related to the creation of the universe, no major philosopher or thinker can be found other than those who have faced this argument; thus this argument has met many criticisms an...

Quantification and Contributing Objects to Thoughts*

In this paper, I shall explore a determiner in natural language which is ambivalent as to whether it should be classified as quantificational or object-denoting: the determiner both. Both in many ways appears to be a paradigmatic quantifier; and yet, I shall argue, it can be interpreted as having an individual—an object—as semantic value. To show the significance of this, I shall discuss two wa...

Conformal Field Theory as a Nuclear Functor

We consider Segal’s categorical approach to conformal field theory (CFT). Segal constructed a category whose objects are finite families of circles, and whose morphisms are Riemann surfaces with boundary compatible with the families of circles in the domain and codomain. A CFT is then defined to be a functor to the category of Hilbert spaces, preserving the appropriate structure. In particular,...

Thomas Reid on Singular Thought

In my dissertation, I offer a new reading of Thomas Reid's philosophy of mind, in which I bring attention to his so far overlooked view that we can entertain a singular thought about an individual substance – we can think directly about a particular object. What emerges is a picture of Reid's theory as psychologically sophisticated, anticipating some very recent and influential views in empiric...

Frege and Object Dependent Propositions

The traditional interpretation of Frege has him endorsing propositions that are not object dependent, i.e., propositions that can exist even though the proper names that occur in the sentences that express them do not refer. But John McDowell and Gareth Evans have challenged this with an influential interpretation of Frege. McDowell first introduced a Fregean reading that included object depend...
