Decomposing Matrices into Blocks

چکیده
In this paper we investigate whether matrices arising from linear or integer programming problems can be decomposed into so-called bordered block diagonal form. More precisely, given some matrix A, we try to assign as many rows as possible to some number β of blocks of size κ such that no two rows assigned to different blocks intersect in a common column. Bordered block diagonal form is desirable because it can guide and speed up the solution process for linear and integer programming problems. We show that various matrices from the LPand MIP-libraries Netlib and Miplib can indeed be decomposed into this form by computing optimal decompositions or decompositions with proven quality. These computations are done with a branch-and-cut algorithm based on polyhedral investigations of the matrix decomposition problem. In practice, however, one would use heuristics to find a good decomposition. We present several heuristic ideas and test their performance. Finally, we investigate the usefulness of optimal matrix decompositions into bordered block diagonal form for integer programming by using such decompositions to guide the branching process in a branch-and-cut code for general mixed integer programs.

Coarse grain parallelism inherent in the solution of Linear Programming LP problems with block angular constraint matrices has been exploited in recent research works However these approaches su er from unscalability and load imbalance since they exploit only the exist ing block angular structure of the LP constraint matrix In this paper we consider decomposing LP constraint matrices to obtain ...

A heuristic for decomposing traffic matrices in TDMA satellite communication. With the time-division multiple access (TDMA) technique in satellite communication the problem arises to decompose a given n x n tramc matrix into a weighted sum of a small number of permutation matrices such that the sum of the weights becomes minimal. There are polynomial algorithms when the number of permutation ma...
متن کاملBlock CUR : Decomposing Large Distributed Matrices
A common problem in large-scale data analysis is to approximate a matrix using a combination of specifically sampled rows and columns, known as CUR decomposition. Unfortunately, in many real-world environments, the ability to sample specific individual rows or columns of the matrix is limited by either system constraints or cost. In this paper, we consider matrix approximation by sampling prede...

Several parallel matrix multiplications developed since four decades based on decomposing the multiplied matrices into smaller size blocks, the blocks will be distributed among the processors to run matrix multiplication in shorter time than when only one processor will run the whole matrix multiplications. All parallel matrix multiplications algorithms suffer from three points: C The optimal s...
