چکیده

The semantic scaling experiment presented in this paper is part of a pilot study to obtain parameters that can describe voice quality of patients with early glottic cancer before and after radiotherapy and of normal speakers. Perceptual evaluation by untrained listeners is one of the measurements that will be used; the aim of this experiment is to obtain a reliable set of semantic scales that can be used to describe voice quality. Voice samples (read aloud text and sustained /a/) of 4 patients before radiotherapy, of 5 patients 6 months after radiotherapy, and of 5 normal speakers are judged by 24 untrained listeners on 22 scales. Reliability coefficients are calculated and factor analyses are carried out on the reliable scales. It appears that voice quality can be described with 16 scales in a 6dimensional space for the read aloud text and with 10 scales in a 4-dimensional space for the sustained /a/. Finally, factor scores for the 14 voices are calculated for further research.

Communicative suitability of voice following radiotherapy for T1 glottic carcinoma: testing the reliability of a rating instrument.

The objective of the study was to determine whether a communicative suitability rating instrument could be used in a meaningful way to assess functionality of voice following radiotherapy for T1 glottic cancer. Seventeen naive listeners judged the suitability of voice of a patient group with T1 glottic carcinoma (n = 20) just before treatment, a group of patients (n = 40) after radiotherapy, an...

The Relation between Perceptual and Clinical Parameters of Voice Quality of Patients with Early Glottic Cancer before and after Radiotherapy and of Normal Speakers

From a theoretical point of view it seems trivial to state that there exists a relation between perception of voice aspects and physically measurable parameters: what you can hear, you should be able to measure and vice versa: what you do measure, you should be able to hear. In practice this assumption is not supported by research: judgements based on auditory perception can be related to acous...

The Study of Vocal Function in Patients With Early Laryngeal Carcinoma After Transoral Laser Microsurgery

Objective Today transoral laser microsurgery is considered as one of the first options to control early laryngeal cancer, and voice disorder is one of the inevitable complications of this therapeutic component. This study aimed to compare the vocal function in patients with early-stage laryngeal cancer following laser surgery with healthy individuals with normal voice quality using acoustic ana...

Evaluating Post-Radiotherapy Laryngeal Function with Laryngeal Videostroboscopy in Early Stage Glottic Cancer

OBJECTIVE Dysphonia is common among patients with early stage glottic cancer. Laryngeal videostroboscopy (LVS) has not been routinely used to assess post-radiotherapy (RT) voice changes. We hypothesized that LVS would demonstrate improvement in laryngeal function after definitive RT for early-stage glottic cancer. STUDY DESIGN Blinded retrospective review of perceptual voice and stroboscopic ...

The efficacy of voice therapy in patients after treatment for early glottic carcinoma.

BACKGROUND After treatment for early glottic carcinoma, a considerable number of patients end up with voice problems that interfere with daily life activities. The objective of this randomized and controlled study was to assess the efficacy of voice therapy in these patients. METHODS Of 177 patients, 6-120 months after treatment for early glottic carcinoma, 70 patients (40%) suffered from voi...
