Random Sampling of Trivial Words in Finitely Presented Groups

چکیده
We describe a novel algorithm for random sampling of freely reduced words equal to the identity in a finitely presented group. The algorithm is based on Metropolis Monte Carlo sampling. The algorithm samples from a stretched Boltzmann distribution π(w) = (|w|+ 1)αβ|w| · Z−1 where |w| is the length of a word w, α and β are parameters of the algorithm, and Z is a normalising constant. It follows that words of the same length are sampled with the same probability. The distribution can be expressed in terms of the cogrowth series of the group, which then allows us to relate statistical properties of words sampled by the algorithm to the cogrowth of the group, and hence its amenability. We have implemented the algorithm and applied it to several group presentations including the Baumslag-Solitar groups, some free products studied by Kouksov, a finitely presented amenable group that is not subexponentially amenable (based on the basilica group), and Richard Thompson’s group F .

On trivial ends of Cayley graph of groups
In this paper, first we introduce the end of locally finite graphs as an equivalence class of infinite paths in the graph. Then we mention the ends of finitely generated groups using the Cayley graph. It was proved that the number of ends of groups are not depended on the Cayley graph and that the number of ends in the groups is equal to zero, one, two, or infinity. For ...
متن کاملThe Word Problem in Quotients of a Group
Every finitely presented group G has a quotient group with solvable word problem – namely the trivial group. We will construct a finitely presented group G such that every non-trivial quotient of G has unsolvable word problem (of degree 0′ in case the quotient is recursively presented) and such that every countable group is embedded in some quotient of G. A presentation of a group is an ordered...

In this paper we study the generic, i.e., typical, behavior of finitely generated subgroups of hyperbolic groups and also the generic behavior of the word problem for amenable groups. We show that a random set of elements of a nonelementary word hyperbolic group is very likely to be a set of free generators for a nicely embedded free subgroup. We also exhibit some finitely presented amenable gr...
متن کاملStatistical properties of subgroups of free groups
The usual way to investigate the statistical properties of finitely generated subgroups of free groups, and of finite presentations of groups, is based on the so-called word-based distribution: subgroups are generated (finite presentations are determined) by randomly chosen k-tuples of reduced words, whose maximal length is allowed to tend to infinity. In this paper we adopt a different, though...
متن کاملWeakly Finitely Presented Infinite Periodic Groups
A group G given by a presentation G = 〈A ‖ R〉 is called weakly finitely presented if every finitely generated subgroup of G, generated by (images of) some words in A, is naturally isomorphic to the subgroup of a group G0 = 〈A0 ‖ R0〉, where A0 ⊆ A, R0 ⊆ R are finite, generated by (images of) the same words. In the article, weakly finitely presented periodic groups which are not locally finite ar...
