KGaA, Weinheim 1 wileyonlinelibrary.com elastic twins and polarization domain walls is complicated, [ 8–10 ] especially in multiferroics with magnetic domains in addition. [ 11 ] Two geometric hierarchies arise that are of signifi cant interest: (1) ferroelastic nano-twins that lie inside ferroelectric meso-domains, as fi rst shown by Simon et al . [ 12 ] and more recently by Evans et al . [ 11 ] and (2) the converse situation with ferroelectric nano-domains inside ferroelastic twins. [ 13 ] These situations produce curious effects, including self-similar domain geometries [ 14 ] and acute sensitivity to irradiation from electron microscopes, [ 15,16 ] and unintentional stress. Asymmetric Response of Ferroelastic Domain-Wall Motion under Applied Bias.

The switching of domains in ferroelectric and multiferroic materials plays a central role in their application to next-generation computer systems, sensing applications, and memory storage. A detailed understanding of the response to electric fields and the switching behavior in the presence of complex domain structures and extrinsic effects (e.g., defects and dislocations) is crucial for the d...

Modeling of Fracture in Ferroelastic Ceramics

Ferroelectric ceramics are used in applications ranging from actuators and sensors to ultrasonic motors. A significant shortcoming of these materials in structural applications is their inherent brittleness. Specifically, most ferroelectrics have fracture toughness levels on the order of KIc MPa m = 1 . The characteristic of ferroelectric ceramics that makes them useful as smart materials is th...

Giant photovoltaic effect of ferroelectric domain walls in perovskite single crystals

The photovoltaic (PV) effect in polar materials offers great potential for light-energy conversion that generates a voltage beyond the bandgap limit of present semiconductor-based solar cells. Ferroelectrics have received renewed attention because of the ability to deliver a high voltage in the presence of ferroelastic domain walls (DWs). In recent years, there has been considerable debate over...

Ferroelastic domain switching dynamics under electrical and mechanical excitations.

In thin film ferroelectric devices, switching of ferroelastic domains can significantly enhance electromechanical response. Previous studies have shown disagreement regarding the mobility or immobility of ferroelastic domain walls, indicating that switching behaviour strongly depends on specific microstructures in ferroelectric systems. Here we study the switching dynamics of individual ferroel...

Rayleigh type behavior of the Young’s modulus of unpoled ferroelectric ceramics and its dependence on temperature

The dependence on stress of the low frequency Young’s modulus and mechanical losses of unpoled ferroelectric ceramics has been studied as a function of temperature. The Young’s modulus of unpoled Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 ~PZT! showed a Rayleigh type dependence, analogous to the one already described for the longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient. This has been associated to ferroelectric/ ferroelastic domai...
