Structural properties of spiral galaxies with and without an AGN: morphology and kinematics

چکیده

The analysis of a sample of 30 isolated spiral galaxies with and without an AGN results in active and control galaxies having similar bulge and disk properties (since both samples are selected to match in morphological and bar classification, they have similar bar percentages). Secondary bars seem also to be indistinguishable. The central kinematics (both stellar and gas) are also studied in order to put some constraints on the processes required to fuel AGNs. Together with previous results, this points to AGNs being an episode of the life of galaxies, providing that the fuel is available and the accumulation mechanisms are at work.

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

Kinematics in the Central Kiloparsec of Spiral Galaxies

Results from kinematic observations of the central regions of spiral galaxies are reviewed, with particular emphasis on starburst and AGN hosts. While morphological studies lead to important insight, a more complete understanding of the physical processes that drive the evolution of the central regions can be achieved with measurements of the kinematics of gas and stars. Here, a variety of obse...

Structure and star formation in disk galaxies - III. Nuclear and circumnuclear Hα emission

From Hα images of a carefully selected sample of 57 relatively large, Northern spiral galaxies with low inclination, we study the distribution of the Hα emission in the circumnuclear and nuclear regions. At a resolution of around 100 parsec, we find that the nuclear Hα emission in the sample galaxies is often peaked, and significantly more often so among AGN host galaxies. The circumnuclear Hα ...

The Properties of Satellite Galaxies in External Systems. I. Morphology and Structural Parameters

We present the first results of an ongoing project to study the morphological, kinematical, dynamical, and chemical properties of satellite galaxies of external giant spiral galaxies. The sample of objects has been selected from the catalogue by Zaritsky et al. (1997). The paper analyzes the morphology and structural parameters of a subsample of 60 such objects. The satellites span a great vari...

Black Hole Mass, Velocity Dispersion and the Radio Source in Agn

The recent discovery of a correlation between nuclear black hole mass, M•, and the stellar velocity dispersion, σ∗(Gebhardt et al. 2000a; Ferrarase & Merritt 2000), in elliptical galaxies and spiral bulges, has raised the question whether such a relationship exists for AGN. Estimates of M• for many AGN, made using reverberation mapping techniques, allow exploration of the relationship between b...
