Creative Designing: an Ontological View

نویسنده

چکیده

This paper presents an ontological account of creative designing. It identifies processes and activities in designing that can produce novel design concepts to change the state space of possible designs. Activities that foster creativity are integrated in an ontological framework of design, the situated function-behaviourstructure (FBS) framework. This provides a foundation for locating these activities across the design steps. An important outcome of this approach is that most steps of designing can be shown to contain opportunities for creativity.

Title: An Ontological Account of Donald Schön’s Reflection in Designing

This paper proposes an ontological model of Donald Schön’s notion of reflection in the domain of designing. We address two views of this notion. First, we present a functional view that describes reflection in terms of the designer’s interactions with the design object and their intended and unintended consequences that then drive further interactions. Second, we present a constructional view t...

تأملی در مفهوم و ارزش خلاقیت: ارزش خلاقانۀ معماری مبتنی‌بر الگو (مقایسۀ چارچوب ارزشی سنتی، معاصر و اسلامی)

Creativity is a concept that is counted nowadays as a person’s most valuable characteristics. It is highly important in the literature of architectural education and the profession. Its normative place in architectural design makes it an essential subject of study. The “meaning” of this concept is put into question in this paper due to its source of normative value. The resear...

Visual Semantics Emergence to Support Creative Designing: a Computational View

One computational model of creative design involves the introduction of new variables or schemas into the designing process. This paper describes and elaborates an approach where an emergence process is used to emerge visual semantics features in a design as it proceeds. In particular visual symmetry, visual rhythm, visual movement and visual balance are emerged. The processes of emergence intr...

An Ontological Basis for Design Methods

This paper presents a view of design methods as process artefacts that can be represented using the function-behaviour-structure (FBS) ontology. This view allows identifying five fundamental approaches to methods: black-box, procedural, artefact-centric, formal and managerial approaches. They all describe method structure but emphasise different aspects of it. Capturing these differences addres...

Ontological Uncertainty and Design: Requirements for Creative Machines

This paper proposes that a particular type of uncertainty, ontological uncertainty, is what distinguishes creative design from other activities that might be considered design, and that much of the work in design methods and design computation is misplaced in the latter due to widely held notions of what computation is. To illustrate the process of design, an example is given of a real instance...
