Biological foundations of language: clues from sign language.

چکیده
The general objective of the research reviewed here is to examine the biological foundations of human language. We report on language and its formal architecture, as well as its representation in the brain, through studying languages that have arisen outside of the mainstream of spoken languages; the visual gestural systems developed among deaf people. The study of sign languages offers a unique opportunity for insight into the nature of neural mechanisms for language, since sign languages utilize a transmission modality different from that of spoken languages. To understand the extent to which neural mechanisms for language are shaped by the modality of their implementation, we are naturally led to the study of sign language because we cannot solve the problem for language in general within the spoken-auditory modality. In these studies, one can make use of the difference in transmission modality between sign and speech to investigate the biological foundations of language. Manual communi-

A Reflection on Kristeva's Approach to the Structure of Language
Reaching out to history and subject in terms of meaning variation, Kristeva could show that language cannot simply be a Saussurean sign system. Rather, she went on to delineate that language, beyond signs, is associated with a dynamic system of signification where the ''speaking subject'' is constantly involved in processing. Julia Kristeva, a French critic, psychoanalyst, theoretician, a post-...
متن کاملLanguage Emergence: Clues from a New Bedouin Sign
A sign language has emerged among three generations of deaf people and their families in a Bedouin community in the Negev desert. This newly reported case sheds light on the minimal environmental social factors required to generate a language.
متن کاملApplying mean shift and motion detection approaches to hand tracking in sign language
Hand gesture recognition is very important to communicate in sign language. In this paper, an effective object tracking and hand gesture recognition method is proposed. This method is combination of two well-known approaches, the mean shift and the motion detection algorithm. The mean shift algorithm can track objects based on the color, then when hand passes the face occlusion happens. Several...
متن کاملAnaphora: Insights from Sign Language (Summary)*
Sign language anaphora is realized very differently from its spoken language counterpart. In simple cases, an antecedent is associated with a locus in signing space, and an anaphoric link is obtained by pointing towards that locus to recover its semantic value. It has been argued that this mechanism is an overt realization of the device of coindexation in formal syntax and semantics. Summarizin...
متن کاملPersian sign language detection based on normalized depth image information
There are many reports of using the Kinect to detect hand and finger gestures after release of device by Microsoft. The depth information is mostly used to separate the hand image in the two-dimension of RGB domain. This paper proposes a method in which the depth information plays a more dominant role. Using a threshold in depth space first the hand template is extracted. Then in 3D domain the ...
