X-ray Absorption Fine Structure of Free Selenium Clusters

چکیده

Although clusters have attracted great interest as intermediate states between atomic and condensed states of matter [1], general methods for the size-selective structural analysis of neutral clusters have not been established so far. Recently we measured the Pho toe lec t ron Pho to ion Coincidence (PEPICO) spectra for selenium dimer Se2 and larger species such as Se5 [2,3]. The PEPICO spectra reveal that the multiply charged ions are produced as a result of de-excitation processes following the K -shell excitation and fragmented to atomic ions with z charges, Sez+, owing to the Coulomb explosion (see Fig. 1). The branching ratios from the parent cluster to the daughter ions exhibit clear dependence on the size N of the parent c lusters. In part icular, the branching ratios in the non-resonant absorption region are well reproduced considering that the charges were randomly distributed within the clusters before the Coulomb explosion. Based upon these findings, we proposed a new method for the size-selective EXAFS of neutral free clusters by utilizing the PEPICO measurements [3]. The basic relations we have suggested are the simultaneous equations of the X-ray absorption coefficients per atom, α (hν), parameterized by z, as follows:

Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure Spectroscopy with X-Ray Free-Electron Lasers

We demonstrate the feasibility of Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy on solids by means of femtosecond soft x-ray pulses from a free-electron laser (FEL). Our experiments, carried out at the Free-Electron Laser at Hamburg (FLASH), used a special sample geometry, spectrographic energy dispersion, single shot position-sensitive detection and a data normalization proce...

Interatomic scattering in energy dependent photoelectron spectra of Ar clusters.

Soft X-ray photoelectron spectra of Ar 2p levels of atomic argon and argon clusters are recorded over an extended range of photon energies. The Ar 2p intensity ratios between atomic argon and clusters' surface and bulk components reveal oscillations similar to photoelectron extended X-ray absorption fine structure signal (PEXAFS). We demonstrate here that this technique allows us to analyze sep...

Modeling of XANES-spectra with the FEFF- program

The aim of this project is the calculation of the absorption coefficient μ of xray absorption spectra as a function of energy and a comparison with experimental data. A characteristic fine structure can be found in x-ray absorption spectra (XAS) consisting of the XANES (X-Ray Absorption Near Edge Structure) and the EXAFS (Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure) region. XANES is characterized ...

Radiation Physics and Chemistry

We review an atomic resolution imaging method based on the analysis of the fine structure in X-ray absorption anisotropy, which results from incident beam diffraction. For a polychromatic X-ray beam, due to the suppression of higher order diffraction fringes, X-ray absorption anisotropy patterns can be interpreted as distorted real-space projections of the atomic structure around absorbing atom...

Oxidation of Pdn (n=1–7, 10) clusters supported on alumina/NiAl(110)

First-principles theoretical investigations on the oxidation of Pdn n=1–7, 10 clusters deposited on alumina/NiAl 110 have been carried out using a gradient-corrected density-functional approach. Our studies indicate that the free Pdn clusters are compact and maintain their compact structures when deposited on the surface, undergoing only small relaxations of the Pd-Pd distance. The clusters bin...
