چکیده

Linear, Low Noise Microwave Photonic Systems using Phase and Frequency Modulation by John Michael Wyrwas Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences University of California, Berkeley Ming C. Wu, Chair Photonic systems that transmit and process microwave-frequency analog signals have traditionally been encumbered by relatively large signal distortion and noise. Optical phase modulation (PM) and frequency modulation (FM) are promising techniques that can improve system performance. In this dissertation, I discuss an optical filtering approach to demodulation of PM and FM signals, which does not rely on high frequency electronics, and which scales in linearity with increasing photonic integration. I present an analytical model, filter designs and simulations, and experimental results using planar lightwave circuit (PLC) filters and FM distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) lasers. The linearity of the PM and FM photonic links exceed that of the current state-of-the-art. Ming C. Wu Dissertation Committee Chair

A photonic chip based frequency discriminator for a high performance microwave photonic link.

We report a high performance phase modulation direct detection microwave photonic link employing a photonic chip as a frequency discriminator. The photonic chip consists of five optical ring resonators (ORRs) which are fully programmable using thermo-optical tuning. In this discriminator a drop-port response of an ORR is cascaded with a through response of another ORR to yield a linear phase mo...

Suppression of SBS-Induced RF Phase Noise in an RF-Photonic Link

In this paper, we examine and suppress the effects of stimulated Brillouin scattering on the phase noise of a 10 GHz signal transmitted over an RF-photonic link. We demonstrate the appearance of interference peaks in the RF phase noise of a microwave signal transmitted through a 10 km optical fiber link. We attribute these peaks to double Brillouin scattering using a reduced model. We determine...

Photonic microwave bandpass filter with improved dynamic range.

A technique to improve the dynamic range of a photonic microwave bandpass filter is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The filter is implemented based on phase modulation to intensity modulation conversion using fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) serving as frequency discriminators, with the optical carriers located at the left or right slopes of the FBGs, to generate positive or negative tap c...

Photonic microwave oscillator based on optical frequency comb and ultrastable optical reference cavity represents the state-of-the-art solution to generate X-band microwaves of ultralow phase noise. Such high-quality microwave source enables a range of applications in which frequency stability and timing accuracy are essential to performance. Wide use of this technology, however, requires compa...
