Unraveling the Process of Creative Destruction: Complementary Assets and Incumbent Survival in the Typesetter Industry
نویسنده
چکیده
When radical technological change transforms an industry established firms sometimes fail drastically and are displaced by new entrants, yet other times survive and prosper. Drawing upon an unusually rich data set that covers the technological and competitive history of the typesetter industry from 1886 to 1990, this paper uses a combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis to unravel this process of creative destruction. It argues that the ultimate commercial performance of incumbents vs. new entrants is driven by the balance and interaction of three factors: investment, technical capabilities, and appropriability through specialized complementary assets. In this industry, specialized complementary assets played a crucial role in buffering incumbents from the effects of competence destruction, and an analysis that examined investment or technical capabilities in isolation would have led to misleading results. This work thus highlights the importance of considering multiple perspectives when examining the competitive implications of technological change. 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Technological Discontinuities and Complementary Assets: A Longitudinal Study of Industry and Firm Performance
We suggest that the type of complementary assets (generic versus specialized) needed to commercialize a new technology is critical in determining the industryand firm-level performance implications of a competence-destroying technological discontinuity. At the industry level, we hypothesize that incumbent industry performance declines if the new technology can be commercialized through generic ...
متن کاملCreative Destruction and the Valuation of Incumbents
I study empirically the causal effects of creative destruction on incumbent firms. Due to concerns about omitted variables, I exploit characteristics of venture capital industry to derive an instrument for startup activity in an industry; I find that industry-level activity is strongly correlated with public market returns of firms funded by venture capital firms in the industry. I then find th...
متن کاملDo the Costs of Cooperation Drive the Gale of Creative Destruction? : Commercialization Strategies in the Medical Device Industry
Theory suggests that an inventor’s choice of commercialization strategy between entrepreneurship and cooperation with an incumbent firm is determined by the intellectual property environment, access to complementary assets, and transaction costs of collaborating with incumbents. We explore this question from the perspective of the incumbent, and consider how the incumbents’ willingness to coope...

Theory suggests that an inventor’s choice of commercialization strategy between entrepreneurship and cooperation with an incumbent firm is determined by the intellectual property environment, access to complementary assets, and transaction costs of collaborating with incumbents. However, this literature frames the choice only from the inventor’s perspective, implicitly assuming that incumbents ...
متن کاملSchumpeter’s Creative Destruction: A Review of the Evidence
Leapfrogging innovation competition through the process of creative destruction encourages the innovation in product and process that lengthens and improves lives. Schumpeter’s process of creative destruction emphasizes dynamic innovation competition, as contrasted with the standard model of static price competition. The ‘big-is-better’ account of creative destruction claimed, in addition, that...
