Dynamics of aeolian sand ripples

چکیده
We analyze theoretically the dynamics of aeolian sand ripples. In order to put the study in the context we first review existing models. This paper is a continuation of two previous papers[3, 4], the first one is based on symmetries and the second on a hydrodynamical model. We show how the hydrodynamical model may be modified to recover the missing terms that are dictated by symmetries. The symmetry and conservation arguments are powerful in that the form of the equation is model-independent. We then present an extensive numerical and analytical analysis of the generic sand ripple equation. We find that at the initial stage the wavelength of the ripple is that corresponding to the linearly most dangerous mode. At later stages the profile undergoes a coarsening process leading to a significant increase of the wavelength. We find that including the next higher order nonlinear term in the equation, leads naturally to a saturation of the local slope. We analyze both analytically and numerically the coarsening stage, in terms of a dynamical exponent for the mean wavelength increase. We discuss some future lines of investigations. Nonlinear dynamics of Aeolian sand ripples.
We study the initial instability of flat sand surface and further nonlinear dynamics of wind ripples. The proposed continuous model of ripple formation allowed us to simulate the development of a typical asymmetric ripple shape and the evolution of a sand ripple pattern. We suggest that this evolution occurs via ripple merger preceded by several soliton-like interaction of ripples.
متن کاملBlown by wind: nonlinear dynamics of aeolian sand ripples
A nonlinear continuum model is considered that describes the dynamics of two-dimensional aeolian sand ripples. This integro-differential model is based on a phenomenological approach due to Anderson. Linear stability analysis using this model shows that a flat sand bed exposed to the action of wind is linearly unstable to long-wavelength perturbations. As the ripples grow, nonlinear effects bec...

Plants in the desert may locally change the aeolian process, and hence the pattern of sand ripples traveling nearby. The effect of plants on ripples is investigated using a coupled map lattice model with nonuniform coupling coefficients.

We present a continuous model capable of demonstrating some salient features of aeolian sand ripples: the realistic asymmetric ripple shape, coarsening of the ripple field at the nonlinear stage of ripple growth, saturation of ripple growth for homogeneous sand, typical size segregation of sand, and formation of armoring layers of coarse particles on ripple crests and windward slopes if the san...
متن کاملLarge Aeolian Ripples: Extrapolations from Earth to Mars
Introduction: The shapes produced on terrestrial surfaces that are continually subject to aeolian processes range in size from tiny ripples to giant draa [1]. The physical mechanism of the formation of ripples, the smallest of aeolian bedforms, is intimately related to saltation and reptation processes. Sand and granule ripples are typically tens of reptation path lengths wide and do not alter ...
متن کاملTwo-Species Continuum Model for Aeolian Sand Ripples
We formulate a continuum model for aeolian sand ripples consisting of two species of grains: a lower layer of relatively immobile clusters, with an upper layer of highly mobile grains moving on top. We predict analytically the ripple wavelength, initial ripple growth rate, and threshold saltation flux for ripple formation. Numerical simulations show the evolution of realistic ripple profiles fr...
