Resource Management in Wide-Area ATM Networks using Effective Bandwidths
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper is principally concerned with resource allocation for connections tolerating statistical quality of service (QoS) guarantees in a public wide-area ATM network. Our aim is to sketch a framework, based on eeective bandwidths, for call admission schemes that are sensitive to individual QoS requirements and account for statistical multiplexing. We begin by describing recent results approximating the eeective bandwidth required by heterogeneous streams sharing buuered links, including results for the packetized generalized processor sharing service discipline. Extensions to networks follow via the concept of decoupling bandwidths-motivated by a study of the input-output properties of queues. Based on these results we claim that networks with suucient routing diversity will inherently satisfy nodal decoupling. We then discuss on-line methods for estimating the eeective bandwidth of a connection. Using this type of traac monitoring we propose an approach to usage parameter control (i.e., policing) for eeective bandwidth descriptors. Finally, we suggest how on-line monitoring might be combined with admission control to exploit unknown statistical multiplexing gains and thus increase utilization.

متن کاملCongestion Control and Resource Management in Diverse ATM Environments
Large propagation-bandwidthproducts and diverse traffic characteristics have made traditional network congestion control and bandwidth management schemes less effective in high speed networks such as ATM. Furthermore, heterogeneities in ATM network size and the services offered must be considered in the development of effective congestion and resource control disciplines. New mechanisms for tra...
متن کاملCharging Schemes for ATM Networks Based on Virtual Effective Bandwidths
In this paper, we propose charging schemes for ATM networks based on the concept of virtual effective bandwidths (VEB). VEBs were initially developed by the authors to support real-time Connection Admission Control (CAC) in a framework where traffic sources with different quality of service (QoS) requirements are multiplexed into the same finite length queue [6]. VEBs allow different QoS requir...
متن کاملUsing ATM Virtual Private Networks for the Internet Data Tra cCarlos
Several schemes for the transport of Internet data traac over ATM are currently being investigated by researchers as well as by standardization bodies. Typically, the main focus of these investigations has been on addressing and switching strategies. Relatively little attention has been given to the eecient allocation, utilization and management of the underlying ATM bandwidth, and to the eecie...
متن کاملThe effective bandwidth of stable distributions
In this paper the effective bandwidths of stable distributions are studied. Effective bandwidths are being heavily promoted as the most appropriate method for call admission control (CAC) and resource allocation within ATM networks. Recent work in teletraffic modelling has suggested that models based on stable distributionsprovide an efficient mechanism for capturing the long range dependence a...
