چکیده

Research in bus and driver scheduling at Leeds University has been taking advantage of new technologies since the early 1960s, with the objective of yielding better schedules more quickly. Here recent SERC supported work is presented. Most bus scheduling systems produce schedules for only one operating scenario. In practice, planning and scheduling are interconnected, and operators have to explore flexibility in timings and route structures. An interactive framework is described which integrates tools designed to minimise trial and error in the process. We also report on two new approaches to driver scheduling. A knowledge-based approach has resulted in an effective set of domain specific rules critically analysing a given problem and accurately estimating the schedule composition and total number of duties required. This estimate will strengthen existing and new methods. Genetic algorithms are powerful in deriving refined solutions to problems very quickly. However, driver scheduling seems to be too difficult a problem for traditional genetic algorithms to yield schedules of acceptable quality. We have analysed the search processes of genetic algorithms and developed new algorithms to overcome shortcomings. Potential for further exploiting these researches is also discussed.

Proposing an approach to calculate headway intervals to improve bus fleet scheduling using a data mining algorithm

The growth of AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location) systems leads to huge amount of data about different parts of bus fleet (buses, stations, passenger, etc.) which is very useful to improve bus fleet efficiency. In addition, by processing fleet and passengers’ historical data it is possible to detect passenger’s behavioral patterns in different parts of the day and to use it in order to improve fle...

A Novel Multiply-Accumulator Unit Bus Encoding Architecture for Image Processing Applications

In the CMOS circuit power dissipation is a major concern for VLSI functional units. With shrinking feature size, increased frequency and power dissipation on the data bus have become the most important factor compared to other parts of the functional units. One of the most important functional units in any processor is the Multiply-Accumulator unit (MAC). The current work focuses on the develop...

The Bus-Driver Scheduling Problem

We present new metaheuristics for solving real crew scheduling problems in a public transportation bus company. Since the crews of these companies are drivers, we will designate the problem by the bus-driver scheduling problem. Crew scheduling problems are well known and several mathematical programming based techniques have been proposed to solve them, in particular using the set-covering form...
