Actin Cytoskeleton: Missing link for intracellular bacterial motility?
نویسنده
چکیده
Vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein (VASP) associates with virulence factors on the surface of intracellular bacteria; by binding to profilin, VASP may help direct the actin assembly that appears to drive bacterial motility.

ENA/VASP proteins: multifunctional regulators of actin cytoskeleton dynamics.
The spatial and temporal regulation of the actin cytoskeleton is fundamental to several cellular processes as diverse as cell motility and immune responses. At the molecular level, the remodelling of the actin cytoskeleton depends on two key events: actin filament nucleation and elongation. Seminal studies on the actin-based intracellular motility of the bacterial pathogen Listeria monocytogene...
متن کاملArrest of Listeria movement in host cells by a bacterial ActA analogue: implications for actin-based motility.
Upon entering the host cell's cytoplasm, the pathogen Listeria monocytogenes can subvert the normal contractile system of the host cell; subsequent assembly of polar actin-filament structures is likely to provide the force for rapid intracellular bacterial movement and its cell-to-cell spread. We have now investigated the functional consequences of microinjecting Listeria-infected PtK2 cells wi...
متن کاملThe epithelial cell cytoskeleton and intracellular trafficking. III. How is villin involved in the actin cytoskeleton dynamics in intestinal cells?
Villin plays a key role in the maintenance of the brush border organization by bundling F-actin into a network of parallel filaments. Our previous in vivo data on villin knockout mice showed that, although this protein is not necessary for the bundling of F-actin, it is important for the reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton elicited by stress conditions. We further investigated villin prope...
متن کاملUse of Shigella flexneri to Study Autophagy-Cytoskeleton Interactions
Shigella flexneri is an intracellular pathogen that can escape from phagosomes to reach the cytosol, and polymerize the host actin cytoskeleton to promote its motility and dissemination. New work has shown that proteins involved in actin-based motility are also linked to autophagy, an intracellular degradation process crucial for cell autonomous immunity. Strikingly, host cells may prevent acti...
متن کاملThe bacterial actin nucleator protein ActA of Listeria monocytogenes contains multiple binding sites for host microfilament proteins
BACKGROUND Several intracellular pathogens, including Listeria monocytogenes, use components of the host actin-based cytoskeleton for intracellular movement and for cell-to-cell spread. These bacterial systems provide relatively simple model systems with which to study actin-based motility. Genetic analysis of L. monocytogenes led to the identification of the 90 kD surface-bound ActA polypeptid...
