چکیده

In this letter, a mathematical force-balance formulation is developed that can be used to predict the critical pressure, the hydrostatic pressure above which the surface starts to depart from the non-wetting state, for superhydrophobic surfaces comprised of highly aligned fibers (e.g., biased AC-electrospun coatings) with arbitrary cross-sectional shapes. We have also developed a methodology for optimizing the fiber cross-sections to maximize the critical pressure of the surface, using the Euler–Lagrange equation. A case study is presented to better demonstrate the application of our method. VC 2012 American Institute of Physics. [http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4711800]

Air–water interface of submerged superhydrophobic surfaces imaged by atomic force microscopy

Underwater air retention of superhydrophobic hierarchically structured surfaces is of increasing interest for technical applications. Persistent air layers (the Salvinia effect) are known from biological species, for example, the floating fern Salvinia or the backswimmer Notonecta. The use of this concept opens up new possibilities for biomimetic technical applications in the fields of drag red...

Bio-inspired dewetted surfaces based on SiC/Si interlocked structures for enhanced-underwater stability and regenerative-drag reduction capability.

Drag reduction has become a serious issue in recent years in terms of energy conservation and environmental protection. Among diverse approaches for drag reduction, superhydrophobic surfaces have been mainly researched due to their high drag reducing efficiency. However, due to limited lifetime of plastron (i.e., air pockets) on superhydrophobic surfaces in underwater, the instability of dewett...

A smooth future?

When a water droplet rolls easily, retaining a nearly perfect spherical shape on a surface that remains essentially dry, such a surface is super-repellent or superhydrophobic. Common superhydrophobic materials include many plant leaves, duck feathers, and glass surfaces coated by black soot dispersed from a lighted candle (see Fig. 1a,b). By convention, for a surface to be superhydrophobic, the...

Preparation and electrowetting transitions on superhydrophobic/ hydrophilic bi-layer structures

A simple method of preparing porous superhydrophobic materials using glass fiber materials, where hydrophobicity is provided by a variety of coatings such as self-assembled alkyl-silane monolayers and fluoropolymers such as Teflon is presented. Fibrous structures of the filter material provide for the modulation of ‘‘surface roughness’’ on the microand nano-scale, required for achieving a super...

Influence of flow on longevity of superhydrophobic coatings.

Previous studies have demonstrated the capability of superhydrophobic surfaces to produce slip flow and drag reduction, which properties hold considerable promise for a broad range of applications. However, in order to implement such surfaces for practical utilizations, environmental factors such as water movement over the surface must be observed and understood. In this work, experiments were ...
