Description Logics as Databases for Structuring Agricultural Information Systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
A database management system that uses a description logic as a data modeling language is used as a basis for building agricultural databases. This supports ontologies as well as semantic query processing, conceptual clustering, and natural language processing. On -line graph-based tools are used for creation of applications. Application examples include an interface for image classification and retrieval in the crop-pest domain, a casebased reasoning system for rootstock selection in citrus, an environment for crop modeling and simulation, and tools for development of agricultural educational resource.

Retrieval as Exploration of Large Multimedia Document Bases
We propose an approach to information retrieval from multimedia databases based on the interpretation of the retrieval task as query by refinement using an explorative design process as guiding metaphor. The combined use of an intensional Index Layer and an extensional Information Layer allows for a flexible incremental structuring of the semantic space according to the requirements of the task...
متن کاملTemporalizing description logics
Traditional rst order predicate logic is known to be designed for representing and manipulating static knowledge (e.g. mathematical theories). So are many of its applications. Knowledge representation systems based on concept description logics are not exceptions. In the framework of a description logic, one can represent an application domain in terms of concepts, roles, and object names. Conc...
متن کاملBringing Together Description Logics and Database in an Object Oriented Model
Description logics have powerful deductive capabilities but rely on a weakly structured model. Databases provide storage optimization and offer better structuring capacities, especially within the object-oriented paradigm. We propose a model which offers the deductive capabilities of description logics and the structuring possibilities of the object approach. We distinguish between three types ...
متن کاملThe Challenge of Integrating Knowledge Representation and Databases
Two di erent aspects of data management are addressed by Knowledge Representation (KR) and Databases (DB): the semantic organization of data and powerful reasoning services by KR, and their e cient management and access by DB. It is recently emerging that experiences from both KR and DB should pro tably crossfertilize each other, and a great interest is rising about this topic. In particular, a...
