Bus Lanes with Intermittent Priority: Screening Formulae and an Evaluation
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper evaluates strategies for operating buses on signal-controlled arterials using special lanes that are made intermittently available to general traffic. The advantage of special bus lanes, intermittent or dedicated, is that they free buses from traffic interference; the disadvantage is that they disrupt traffic. We find that intermittent lanes, unlike dedicated ones, do not significantly reduce street capacity. Intermittence, however, increases the average traffic density at which the demand is served, and as a result increases traffic delay. These delays are more than offset by the benefits to bus passengers as long as traffic demand does not exceed by much the maximum flow possible on the non-special lanes; the smaller the excess the better. The main factors determining whether an intermittent system saves time are: the traffic saturation level; the bus frequency; the improvement in bus travel time achieved by the special lane; and the ratio of bus and car occupant flows. In some scenarios where a dedicated bus lane could not be operated, an intermittent lane can save to bus and car occupants together as much as 20 persons-min of travel per buskm. The required conditions for this to happen are quite particular. Typical savings are smaller. Formulae are given.

Measuring and Evaluation on Priority Lanes
Along with economic development, cities are increasingly congested in China. In order to eliminate peak-hour congestion, many cities establish priority lanes, commonly bus lanes. Although priority lanes could help Local Authorities gain its short-term management objectives, at the same time, it would greatly infringe on the legitimate rights of other vehicles and waste the scarce road resources...
متن کاملOptimal Connected Urban Bus Network of Priority Lanes
This work presents a new approach and modeling for selecting an optimal network of public transport (PT) priority lanes. Bus priority schemes and techniques on urban roads and highways have proven effective for almost a half century. Many bus-priority studies have been published and demonstrated worldwide, but none is dealt with optimal connected network of PT priority lanes. The approach used ...
متن کاملDesign of Transit Signal Priority at Signalized Intersections with Queue Jumper Lanes
A queue jumper lane is a special bus preferential treatment that combines a short stretch of a special lane with a transit signal priority (TSP) to allow buses to bypass waiting queues of traffic and then to cut out in front of the queue by getting an early green signal. This paper first proposes a signal control design for queue jumper lanes with actuated TSP strategies and then compares its p...
متن کاملAn Optimization Model for the Selection of Bus-Only Lanes in a City
The planning of urban bus-only lane networks is an important measure to improve bus service and bus priority. To determine the effective arrangement of bus-only lanes, a bi-level programming model for urban bus lane layout is developed in this study that considers accessibility and budget constraints. The goal of the upper-level model is to minimize the total travel time, and the lower-level mo...
متن کاملBus Priority of SCOOT Evaluated in a VISSIM Simulation Environment
Transit usage is based on reliable and timely service. Priority is one method for maintaining reduced transit travel times and a reliable schedule, which make transit more attractive. However, with most buses operating within the same traffic lanes as other vehicle traffic, priority policy affects the surrounding traffic. Consequently, priority is often limited to minimal green time extensions ...
