چکیده

Given a configuration C of geometric objects in R2 (called the input configuration), a target configuration T of geometric objects in R1, and a class S of allowable sectioning lines we consider in this paper many variations on the following problem: ‘Is there a line S ∈ S such that the section S ∩ C is equivalent by rigid motion to the target T ?’ Mathematics Subject Classifications (2000): 68Q25, 68W40.

Employing Foundation Nonlinearity to Mitigate Seismic Demand in Superstructure

Because of difficulty in inspection and retrofit of foundation in comparison with other elements, the common design philosophy is to avoid any nonlinear deformation in the foundation. This paper shows that by employing controlled foundation nonlinearity, in predetermined sections with arrangements for inspection and retrofit, it is possible to reduce seismic demand on superstructure. Localizing...

A method for 2-dimensional inversion of gravity data

Applying 2D algorithms for inverting the potential field data is more useful and efficient than their 3D counterparts, whenever the geologic situation permits. This is because the computation time is less and modeling the subsurface is easier. In this paper we present a 2D inversion algorithm for interpreting gravity data by employing a set of constraints including minimum distance, smoothness,...

"CONTOUR" Algorithm for Finding and Visualizing Flat Sections of 3D-Objects

One of the visualization problems implies finding boundaries and insides of flat sections of 3D objects specified analytically. This problem is to be solved to analyze the results and to control the geometry specification. On the one hand, the analytic definition of profiles for “not simple” 3D-objects in general case is actually unsolvable problem; on the other hand, it is necessary to apply v...

Generating a model of the three-dimensional spatial distribution of neurons using density maps

Microcolumns are a vertical arrangement of neocortical neurons that may constitute a fundamental computational ensemble but have been difficult to study morphologically because of the challenges of determining the three-dimensional (3D) spatial arrangements of individual neurons in the ensemble. Previously, a statistical density map method was developed to characterize microcolumns using two-di...

Unbiased estimation of chloroplast number in mesophyll cells: advantage of a genuine three-dimensional approach

Chloroplast number per cell is a frequently examined quantitative anatomical parameter, often estimated by counting chloroplast profiles in two-dimensional (2D) sections of mesophyll cells. However, a mesophyll cell is a three-dimensional (3D) structure and this has to be taken into account when quantifying its internal structure. We compared 2D and 3D approaches to chloroplast counting from di...
