چکیده

This paper explores the effect of inlet flow modifcation on the cavitating and noncavitating performance of two cavitating inducers, one of simple helical design and the other a model of the low-pressure LOX pump in the Space Shuttle Main Engine. The modifications were generated by sections of honeycomb, both uniform and nonuniform. Signifcant improvement in the performance over a wide range of flow coefficients resulted from the use of either honeycomb section. Measurements of the axial and swirl velocity profiles of the flows entering the inducers were made in order to try to understand the nature of the inlet flow and the manner in which it is modified by the honeycomb sections.

On the hydrodynamics of rocket propellant engine inducers and turbopumps

The lecture presents an overview of some recent results of the work carried out at Alta on the hydrodynamic design and rotordynamic fluid forces of cavitating turbopumps for liquid propellant feed systems of modern rocket engines. The reduced order models recently developed for preliminary geometric definition and noncavitating performance prediction of tapered-hub axial inducers and centrifuga...

MULTI PHASE COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS MODELING OF CAVITATING FLOWS OVER AXISYMMETRIC HEAD-FORMS

In the present paper, partial cavitation over various head-forms was studied numerically to predict the shape of the cavity. Navier-Stokes equations in addition to an advection equation for vapor volume fraction were solved. Mass transfer between the phases was modeled by a sink term in vapor equation in the numerical analysis for different geometries in wide range of cavitation numbers. The r...

Experimental and Numerical Studies on a Centrifugal Pump with 2d-curved Blades in Cavitating Condition

In the presented study a special test-pump with 2D curvature blade geometry in cavitating and non-cavitating conditions was investigated using different experimental techniques and a 3D numerical model of cavitating flows. Experimental and numerical results concerning pump characteristics and performance breakdown were compared at different flow conditions. Appearing types of cavitation and the...

Plasma hypoxanthine: a marker for hypoxic-ischaemic induced periventricular leucomalacia?

Cerebral ischaemia of the immature brain may result in cavitating periventricular leucomalacia (PVL), an important association of cerebral palsy. Hypoxanthine measured by high performance liquid chromatography was used as a marker of peripartum hypoxia and ischaemia in 116 infants at risk of PVL. PVL was detected by ultrasound. The 81 infants who were unaffected had median (range) gestation of ...

The Dynamic Performance O F Cavitating Turbopumps

Knowledge of the dynamic performance of turbopumps is essential for the prediction of instabilities in hydraulic systems; the necessary information i s in the form of a transfer function relating the instantaneous pressures and mass flow rates at inlet and discharge. Cavitation has a significant effect on this transfer function since dynamical changes in the volume of cavitation contribute to t...
