Amphoteric Colloids. I. Cii_emical Influence of the Hydrogen Ion Concentration

چکیده
I t is often stated (Pauli, H6ber, and others) that both ions of a neutral salt affect the physical properties of an amphoteric electrolyte (ampholyte) simultaneously and in the opposite sense; so that the total result is the algebraic sum of the opposite action of the oppositely charged ions of the neutral salt. 1 The writer has beelz able to show by experiments on gelatin and on pig's bladder tha t this statement is not correct, but that apparently only one of the two ions of the neutral salt acts upon the ampholyte; namely, the one which has the opposite electric charge from that of the ampholyte. 2 The hydrogen ion concentration of the gelatin solution used by the writer was 10 -7 (or in S6rensen's logarithmic symbol pH = 7.0) and this gelatin reacted with neutral salts as if it were an anion capable of combining with the cation of a neutral salt. When, however, powdered gelatin is treated for some time with an acid, e.g. HC1, gelatin chloride (or hydrochloride) is formed, which is supposed to dissociate electrolytically into a positive gelatin ion and a negative chlorion. The writer found that when the supernatant

Amphoteric Behavior of Complex Systems
The amphoteric behavior of a system of two amphoteric components is theoretically examined; and this is shown to correspond more nearly with certain of the physical and chemical behaviors of living tissues than does the concept of a simple ampholyte.

"Aluminium hydroxide dissolves in acids. From its solution in hydrochloric acid, an aluminlum salt, aluminium chloride A1C13, 6H20, is obtained. I t also combines with strong bases, dissolving for instance in a solution of sodium hydroxide and forming an aluminate, NaA102 . . . . According to the best knowledge we have on the subject, the molecule of aluminium hydroxide has the following struct...
متن کاملThe Colloidal Behavior of Edestin
1. It has been shown by titration experiments that the globulin edestin behaves like an amphoteric electrolyte, reacting stoichiometrically with acids and bases. 2. The potential difference developed between a solution of edestin chloride or acetate separated by a collodion membrane from an acid solution free from protein was found to be influenced by salt concentration and hydrogen ion concent...
متن کاملIon exchange and protonation equilibria of an amphoteric ion-exchange resin in the presence of simple salt.
The influence of simple salts on the ion exchange and protonation equilibria of an amphoteric ion-exchange resin, which has strong base and weak acid moieties in a single functional group fixed onto the styrene-DVB matrix, has been investigated. Concentrations of ionic species in the amphoteric ion-exchange resin in equilibrium with various sodium salt solutions were estimated by (23)Na NMR spe...
