Alternating Sums Concerning Multiplicative Arithmetic Functions

چکیده
We deduce asymptotic formulas for the alternating sums ∑ n≤x(−1)f(n) and ∑ n≤x(−1) 1 f(n) , where f is one of the following classical multiplicative arithmetic functions: Euler’s totient function, the Dedekind function, the sum-of-divisors function, the divisor function, the gcd-sum function. We also consider analogs of these functions, which are associated to unitary and exponential divisors, and other special functions. Some of our results improve the error terms obtained by Bordellès and Cloitre. We formulate certain open problems.

On the Average Value of Divisor Sums in Arithmetic Progressions
We consider very short sums of the divisor function in arithmetic progressions prime to a fixed modulus and show that “on average” these sums are close to the expected value. We also give applications of our result to sums of the divisor function twisted with characters (both additive and multiplicative) taken on the values of various functions, such as rational and exponential functions; in pa...
متن کاملMULTIPLICATIVE RELATIONS BETWEEN COEFFICIENTS OF LOGARITHMIC DERIVATIVES OF Fq-LINEAR FUNCTIONS AND APPLICATIONS
We prove some interesting multiplicative relations which hold between the coefficients of the logarithmic derivatives obtained in a few simple ways from Fq-linear formal power series. Since the logarithmic derivatives connect power sums to elementary symmetric functions via the Newton identities, we establish, as applications, new identities between important quantities of function field arithm...
متن کاملAlternating Weighted Sums of Inverses of Binomial Coefficients
We consider the alternating sums S (m) n = ∑n k=0(−1) k ( n k ) −1 , recently studied by Belbachir, Rahmani, and Sury, and obtain some results complementary to those found by the three authors, especially concerning generating functions, closed forms, and asymptotic approximation.
متن کاملMultiplicative Functions Dictated by Artin Symbols
Granville and Soundararajan have recently suggested that a general study of multiplicative functions could form the basis of analytic number theory without zeros of L-functions; this is the so-called pretentious view of analytic number theory. Here we study multiplicative functions which arise from the arithmetic of number fields. For each finite Galois extension K/Q, we construct a natural cla...
متن کاملFaulhaber's theorem on power sums
We observe that the classical Faulhaber’s theorem on sums of odd powers also holds for an arbitrary arithmetic progression, namely, the odd power sums of any arithmetic progression a+b, a+2b, . . . , a+nb is a polynomial in na+ n(n + 1)b/2. While this assertion can be deduced from the original Fauhalber’s theorem, we give an alternative formula in terms of the Bernoulli polynomials. Moreover, b...
