Unobserved Population Heterogeneity: 30 Years of Frailty Models in Demography

چکیده

Unobserved population heterogeneity and its impact on life-table estimates motivated the introduction of frailty models three decades ago. The concept of latent individual differences repeatedly proved useful in applications and led to important insights, in demography and beyond. This talk reviews the influence that the seminal paper by Vaupel et al. had on demographic research in general and presents some recent demographic applications of frailty models.

Mortality by education level at late-adult ages in Turin: a survival analysis using frailty models with period and cohort approaches

OBJECTIVES Neglecting the presence of unobserved heterogeneity in survival analysis models has been showed to potentially lead to underestimating the effect of the covariates included in the analysis. This study aimed to investigate the role of unobserved heterogeneity of frailty on the estimation of mortality differentials from age 50 on by education level. DESIGN Longitudinal mortality foll...

Cause-selecting Charts based on Proportional Hazards and Binary Frailty Models (Quality Engineering Conference Paper)

Monitoring the reliability of products in both the manufacturing and service processes is of main concern in today’s competitive market. To this end, statistical process control has been widely used to control the reliability-related quality variables. The so-far surveillance schemes have addressed processes with independent quality characteristics. In multistage processes, however, the cascade...

Analysis of Birth Spacing Using Frailty Models

Background and objectives: Birth spacing is an important variable for identification of fertility acceleration, total fertility rate, and maternal and fetal health. Therefore, special attention has been paid to this issue by researchers in the fields of medical sciences, health, and population. In addition, proper analysis of this concept is of foremost importance. Application of classical anal...

Age-specific death rates with tobacco smoking and occupational activity: sensitivity to sample length, functional form, and unobserved frailty.

In this article, we estimate accelerated time-to-failure and proportional-hazard functions with about 100,000 members of the Dorn sample, finding greater hazards associated with smoking and some dependence on occupational variables that measure risk and physical activity. We answer three questions: (1) How sensitive are the estimates to sample length, using monthly data for the periods 1954-196...

Bayesian Estimation in Shared Compound Negative Binomial Frailty Models

Frailty models are used in survival analysis to model unobserved heterogeneity. To study such heterogeneity by the inclusion of a random term called the frailty is assumed to multiply hazards of all subjects in the shared frailty. We study compound negative binomial distribution as frailty distribution and two different baseline distributions namely Pareto and linear failure rate distribution i...
