چکیده

Preliminary 10and 20-t•m brightness temperatures of Mars are presented. More than 35% of the Martian surface was observed with a resolution better than 100 km. On the whole, the results confirm the thermal properties derived from the Mariner 6 and 7 radiometers, although the temperatures, on the average, were cooler and shifted with respect to the Martian day during the dust storm. Thermal inertias and radiometric albedos were derived for many areas; no clear correlation exists between these properties. Thermal structure again was found at the spatial limit of the radiometer; no cases were found in which it was necessary to invoke internal heat sources.

Evidence for Residual CO2 Frost

The first spacecraft observations of the south residual polar cap of Mars were obtained by the Mariner 9 orbiter during the Martian southern summer season, 1971-1972. Analyses of Viking orbiter observations obtained 3 Mars years later have shown that residual carbon dioxide frost was present at the south polar cap in 1977. In this study, Mariner 9 infrared interferometer spectrometer spectra an...

Mariner 9 Ultraviolet Spectrometer Experiment: Vertical Distribution of Ozone on Mars

The vertical distribution of ozone in the atmosphere of Mars is computed from ultraviolet spectra obtained by the Mariner 9 spacecraft. In the Northern Hemisphere the ozone scale height is much smaller than the atmospheric scale height in midlatitudes and increases rapidly to a maximum farther north. At high latitudes (above 60 °) there is no significant difference between the scale heights of ...

Radiometric Measurement Comparison Using the Ocean Color Temperature Scanner (OCTS) Visible and Near Infrared Integrating Sphere

As a part of the pre-flight calibration and validation activities for the Ocean Color and Temperature Scanner (OCTS) and the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) ocean color satellite instruments, a radiometric measurement comparison was held in February 1995 at the NEC Corporation in Yokohama, Japan. Researchers from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the Nat...

Preliminary Design of Spacecraft Attitude Control with Pulse-Width Pulse-Frequency Modulator for Rest-to-Rest Maneuvers

In this paper, the preferred region of design parameters for quasi-normalized equations of single-axis attitude control of rigid spacecraft using pulse-width pulse-frequency modulator (PWPFM) is presented for rest-to-rest maneuvers. Using the quasi-normalized equations for attitude control reduces the system parameters, that is, the moment of inertia, the filter gain, and the maximum torque of ...

New Mariner 6 and 7 Mosaics of Mars: Clues about Time Variable Surface

Introduction: Reprocessed far encounter data from Mariner 6 and 7 (1969) provide a valuable timestep with which to examine large scale surface processes on Mars. Although low resolution (20 km/pixel), the Mariner 6 and 7 far encounter images easily resolve large scale albedo features (>100 km). Planetary observers over the last century have tracked variations in size, shape, and location of alb...
