چکیده

INTRODUCTION THE experimental production of corneal vascularisation has been performed by various workers. Ehlers (1927) made daily applications of ethyl alcohol to rabbits' corneae resulting in a loss of corneal transparency 'and an ingrowth of vessels from all round the limbus into the anteri6r two-thirds of the cornea. Julianelle (1933) produced " pannus " formation by intra-corneal injection of proteins after sensitisation of rabbits and monkeys. Mann (1943) described new-vessel formation in the cornea after application of mustard gas and related substances. In none ofthese

Spontaneous lymphatic vessel formation and regression in the murine cornea.

PURPOSE Lymphatic dysfunctions are associated with many diseases, ranging from cancer metastasis to transplant rejection, for which there is little effective treatment. To date, there is no natural model with which to study lymphatic regression. This study was conducted to investigate whether murine cornea, an extensively exploited tissue for vascular studies, derives its lymphatic-free status ...

Angiopoietin-Like 7 Is an Anti-Angiogenic Protein Required to Prevent Vascularization of the Cornea

PURPOSE We sought to identify the anti-angiogenic molecule expressed in corneal keratocytes that is responsible for maintaining the avascularity of the cornea. METHODS Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were cultured with either human dermal fibroblasts or with human corneal keratocytes under serum-free conditions. The areas that exhibited blood vessel formation were estimated by...

A requirement for copper in angiogenesis.

Although two decades have passed since copper was shown to stimulate blood vessel formation in the avascular cornea of rabbits, only recently have clinical trials established that Cu privation by diet or by Cu chelators diminishes a tumor's ability to mount an angiogenic response. These data have shed new light on the functional role of Cu in microvessel development and, of equal importance, st...

Communications; the role of ascorbic acid in corneal vascularization.

Introduction ALTHOUGH the cornea normally has no blood vessels, yet, under certain conditions, new vessels freely enter the substa-nce of the cornea from the limbal plexus. To explain this invasion many theories have been advanced. In riboflavin deficiency there is corneal vascularization. Since riboflavin is part of an oxidation enzyme system, Bessey and Wolbach (1939), and Johnson and Eckardt...

Sonic hedgehog: its expression in a healing cornea and its role in neovascularization

PURPOSE To examine if sonic hedgehog (Shh) is involved in tissue neovascularization by using cell culture and an animal cornea. METHODS The effects of exogenous Shh (5.0 nM), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and/or a Shh signal inhibitor (2.5 or 10.0 muM cyclopamine) on vessel-like tube formation of vascular endothelial cells were examined in vitro. The effects of Shh on the express...
