Popular Diets and Athletes Premises, Promises, Pros, and Pitfalls of Diets and What Athletes Should Know About Diets and Sports Performance

چکیده
Popular diets often appeal to athletes because they promise an easy way to reduce body fat, increase muscle mass, and improve health. This article examines 4 popular diets: raw food diets, gluten-free diets, intermittent fasting, and the Paleolithic (‘‘Caveman’’) diet and discusses their premises, promises, pros, and pitfalls. Special emphasis is placed on what athletes should know if they choose to follow a popular diet. Diet plans often need modification to ensure that sufficient energy, macronutrient and micronutrient intakes are met to fuel sports training and competition. Nutr Today. 2014;49(5):244Y248

Exercise scientists teach that since muscle glycogen utilisation occurs at high rates (during high-intensity exercise in carbohydrate-adapted athletes), all athletes must be advised to ingest large amounts of carbohydrate before and during exercise. 2 But this does not seem entirely logical. متن کاملA Brief Review of Higher Dietary Protein Diets in Weight Loss: A Focus on Athletes
Thermodynamics dictates that for body weight (i.e. stored substrate) loss to occur a person must ingest less energy than they expend. Athletes, who owing to their oftentimes large daily energy expenditures, may have greater flexibility than non-athletes in this regard; however, they may also have different goals for weight loss. In particular, weight lost may be less important to an athlete tha...
متن کاملLow-Carbohydrate-High-Fat Diet: Can it Help Exercise Performance?
Low-carbohydrate-high-fat (LCHF) diets have been used as a means of weight loss and control of symptoms in several clinical conditions. There is emerging evidence that the metabolic changes induced by LCHF diets enhance endurance performance. The aims of this review are to examine the evidence of LCHF diets in improving various aspects of athletic performance. Long-term LCHF dietary intake may ...
