Filling Empty Seats: How Status and Organizational Hierarchies Affect Exploration versus Exploitation in Team Design
نویسندگان
چکیده
Informal and formal mechanisms affect choices between exploitation and exploration in team design. We argue that the status differentiation of team members and differences in organizational structure limit exploration in the form of introducing newcomers to teams and creating new combinations of team members. Highand low-status team members and oneand three-layer organizational structures were expected to be positively related to exploration, and middle-status team members and two-layer structures were expected to be negatively related to it. We used data on 6,446 motion pictures produced by the Hollywood film industry in the period 1929–58 to test our hypotheses.

Influence and Structure: Extending a model of organizational learning
Using computational modeling of organizational learning, March (1991) differentiated between two learning mechanisms exploration and exploitation. Exploitation refers to the mechanism by which individuals modify their beliefs to that of the organizational code, thereby diffusing organizational knowledge. Exploration refers to the modification of the organizational code by the influence of indiv...

متن کاملExtending March's Exploration and Exploitation: Managing Knowledge in Turbulent Environments
We extend March’s model of exploration and exploitation to consider how environmental turbulence impacts organizational knowledge in hierarchies of varying size and depth. We then evaluate additional effects of a knowledge management (KM) system that collects and shares knowledge from expert individuals in an organization. We find that in the absence of personnel turnover, a management strategy...
متن کاملExploration and exploitation in product innovation
A central theoretical problem in organizational evolution is how organizations acquire new capabilities. Organizational exploitation of current capabilities often reduces exploration of new capabilities, resulting in a short-term bias in organizational adaptation (March, 1991). In addition, problemistic search and slack search have different consequences for exploration and exploitation because...
