چکیده

Clinical and experimental studies on respiratory involvement and alterations in immune status were carried out. Respiratory distress occurring in these patients has improved gradually for 14 years but still remains. Copious expectoration at an early stage of the disease may be related to the fact that a number of discrete polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are distributed throughout the lung parenchyma. For accumulation in the bronchial mucosa, structural requirements and specific dose dependence of PCBs have been clearly shown; however, pathological and physiological studies have indicated that respiratory involvement in yusho is mainly small airway disease that may be caused by involvement of cellular component (Clara cells) in bronchioles and/or associated infection. Respiratory distress is often exacerbated by viral or bacterial infection. Changes in the immune status in PCB and polychlorinated dibenzofuran (PCDF) poisoning are as follows: IgA and IgM in the serum are decreased at an early stage of the disease and then return to normal; suppression of cellular immunity was reported in Taiwanese patients and some may remain in the later stages of the disease, as shown in our patients. PCDFs now appear to be the main causal agents in yusho. Rats given PCDFs showed necrosis of the Clara cells in bronchioles and marked thymus atrophy, while few such changes were noted in rats given PCBs. Therefore, further examination is needed for the difference of the toxic effects between two compounds.

Yusho patients show increased serum IL-17, IL-23, IL-1β, and TNFα levels more than 40 years after accidental polychlorinated biphenyl poisoning.

The Yusho poisoning incident, caused by rice oil contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated quarterphenyls (PCQs), and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) generated by heat-denatured PCBs, occurred in 1968 in western Japan. Although severe symptoms are rarely observed today, the levels of PCBs and PCDFs in the sera of Yusho patients remain high. The aryl hydrocarbon r...

A Clinical Trial of Kampo Formulae for the Treatment of Symptoms of Yusho, a Poisoning Caused by Dioxins and Related Organochlorine Compounds

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of traditional herbal medicines (Kampo) on the symptoms of Yusho. Yusho is a mass food poisoning that was caused by ingestion of rice oil contaminated with dioxins and related organochlorines in 1968. Patients with Yusho suffer from skin symptoms (acneform eruptions, liability to suppuration and pigmentation), respiratory symptoms (c...

Predictive Factors of Respiratory Failure in Children with Guillain-Barre Syndrome

Introduction:Guillain-Barre Syndrome(GBS) is the most common cause of acute flaccid paralysis. Respiratory failure is the most serious short-term complication of GBS and invasive mechanical ventilation is required in 30% of patients.moreover,60% of those who are intubated develop major complications including pnemonia, sepsis,GI bleeding and pulmonary embolism. Thus respiratory failure predictio...

Past and current dermatological status of yusho patients.

Skin symptoms of "yusho" and their change thereafter are described. In the early stage, skin eruptions were the most prominent and impressive features of yusho. Acneiform eruptions and pigmentation were most conspicuous. With the passage of time, there is some improvement and most patients now have few eruptions, except for the severely intoxicated group. As for blood PCB analysis, the severely...

Surveys of workers occupationally exposed to PCBs and of yusho patients.

Surveys of workers occupationally exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the production of thread or of paint, and of yusho patients were carried out from 1973 to 1982. PCB concentrations in the plasma of the workers ranged from 2 to 521 ppb, and some showed higher PCB levels in the plasma than typical Japanese yusho patients. Gas chromatographic patterns of plasma PCBs of the workers w...
