چکیده

Turbulence and transport across magnetic field lines disrupt plasma confinement, which is particularly troublesome in toroidal geometries potentially useful for fusion energy. We investigate fluctuations of a helium plasma in the Enormous Toroidal Plasma Device (ETPD) at UCLA using 4-tip Langmuir probes to measure potential and ion saturation current. ETPD is a simple magnetized torus with major radius 5 m. The toroidal vacuum chamber has a rectangular cross section that is 3 m tall and 2 m wide. Plasma is generated by a lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) cathode discharge into a helical magnetic field produced by a ∼ 250 G toroidal field and a ∼ 6 G vertical field. Typical plasma density is ne ∼ 10 cm−3 and typical electron temperature is Te ∼ 10−20 eV. Observed fluctuations are characterized and compared with theories of drift waves and interchange modes.

Termination of a magnetized plasma on a neutral gas: the end of the plasma.

Experiments are performed at the Enormous Toroidal Plasma Device at UCLA to study the neutral boundary layer (NBL) between a magnetized plasma and a neutral gas along the direction of a confining magnetic field. This is the first experiment to measure plasma termination within a neutral gas without the presence of a wall or obstacle. A magnetized, current-free helium plasma created by a lanthan...

Laboratory Observations of Shear Alfvén Waves Launched from a Small Source

Shear Alfvén waves with transverse scales of electron skin-depth size are launched with a dual-disk antenna in the Large Plasma Device at UCLA. The waves are studied in the kinetic and inertial regimes. The kinetic shear Alfvén wave is observed for the first time and exhibits predicted radial structure. The perpendicular propagation of the wave is also studied for the first time, and it is foun...

Relaxation of spheromak plasmas toward a minimum-energy state and global magnetic fluctuations.

Globally coherent modes which are observed during formation in the S-1 Spheromak plasma occur during flux conversion and plasma relaxation toward a minimum-energy state, suggesting that these modes provide a means for relaxation. A significant finding is the temporal progression of these modes through a sequence n = 5, 4, 3, 2, m = 1, as q rises through rational fractions m/n, where n and m are...

Studies of large, non-circular, reversed field pinch discharges

Reversed field pinch (RFP) discharges have been produced in a large (1.39 metre major radius, 0.56 metre average minor radius), thick walled (5 cm), aluminium vacuum vessel with indented sides. The discharges are self-reversed and ramped up to a current of 300 kA over a time of 10 ms. Reversal is sustained for £ 10 resistive diffusion times, despite the presence of large magnetic fluctuations. ...

Numerical Studies and Simulation of the Lower Hybrid Waves Current Drive by using Fokker – Planck Equation in NSST and HT-7 Tokamaks

Recent experiments on the spherical tokamak have discovered the conditions to create a powerful plasma and ensure easy shaping and amplification of stability, high bootstrap current and confinement energy. The spherical tours (ST) fusion energy development path is complementary to the tokamak burning plasma experiment such as NSTX and higher toroidal beta regimes and improves the design of a po...
