High - resolution Observations of OH ( 1720 MHz ) Masers Toward the Galactic Center

چکیده
High-resolution VLA observations of 1720 MHz OH maser emission from Sgr A East and the circumnuclear disk with spatial and spectral resolutions of ≈ 2. ′′ 5 × 1. ′′ 3 and 0.27 kms −1 are reported. This follow-up observational study focuses on the recent discovery of a number of such OH maser features and their intense circularly polarized maser lines detected toward these Galactic center sources. The 1720 MHz maser line of OH arises from collisionally excited gas behind a C-type shock and is an important diagnostic of the interaction process that may occur between molecular clouds and associated X-ray emitting shell-type supernova remnants. The present observations have confirmed that the observed Stokes V signal is due to Zeeman splitting and that the OH masers are angularly broadened by the scattering medium toward the Galactic center. The scale length of the magnetic field fluctuations in the scattering medium toward the Galactic center is estimated to be greater than 0.1-0.2 pc using the correlation of the position angles of the scatter-broadened maser spots. In addition, the kinematics of the maser spots associated with Sgr A East are used to place a 5 pc displacement between this extended radio structure and the Galactic center.

Supernova OH ( 1720 MHz ) Masers in Sgr A East , W 28 and G 359 . 1 - 0 . 5
A new class of OH (1720 MHz) masers unaccompanied by main-line transitions have recently been discovered (Frail, Goss and Slysh 1994). These masers lie at the interface between supernova remnants (SNRs) interacting with molecular clouds. We discuss three new aspects of SN masers found in the direction toward the Galactic center: (i) the detection of a new –130 kms OH (1720 MHz) maser in the sou...
متن کاملHigh Spectral and Spatial Resolution Observations of Shocked Molecular Hydrogen at the Galactic Center
The presence of OH (1720 MHz) masers, and the absence of counterparts at 1665/1667 MHz has proved to be a clear diagnostic of shocked molecular gas associated with Galactic supernova remnants. This suggests that shocked molecular gas should be associated with the OH (1720 MHz) masers that have been detected in the circumnuclear disk (CND) and Sgr A East at the Galactic center. In order to test ...
متن کاملA search for 4750- and 4765-MHz OH masers in Southern Star Forming Regions
We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to make a sensitive (5-σ ≃ 100 mJy) search for maser emission from the 4765-MHz 2Π1/2 F=1→0 transition of OH. Fifty five star formation regions were searched and maser emission with a peak flux density in excess of 100 mJy was detected toward fourteen sites, with ten of these being new discoveries. In addition we observed the 4750-MHz 2Π...
متن کاملPolarization Observations of 1720 MHz OH Masers toward the Three Supernova Remnants W 28 , W
We present arcsecond resolution observations from the VLA1 with full Stokes polarimetry of the ground-state satellite line of the hydroxyl molecule (OH) at 1720.53 MHz (2Π 3 2 , J = 32 , F = 2 → 1) toward three Galactic supernova remnants: W 28, W 44, and IC 443. The total number of individual OH(1720 MHz) “spots” we detect in each of these three remnants is 41, 25 and 6, respectively. The OH(1...
متن کاملA Search for Supernova-Remnant Masers Toward Unidentified EGRET Sources
Supernova remnants expanding into adjacent molecular clouds are believed to be sites of cosmic ray acceleration and sources of energetic gamma-rays. Under certain environmental conditions, such interactions also give rise to unusual OH masers in which the 1720 MHz satellite line dominates over the more common 1665/7 MHz emission. Motivated by the apparent coincidence of a handful of EGRET sourc...
