Kant’s Model of Causality: Causal Powers, Laws, and Kant’s Reply to Hume

چکیده
KANT’S VIEWS ON CAUSALITY have received an extraordinary amount of scholarly attention, especially in comparison with Hume’s position. For Hume presents powerful skeptical arguments concerning causality, yet Kant claims to have an adequate response to them. Since it turns out to be far from obvious what even the main lines of Kant’s response are, scholars have felt the need to clarify his position. Unfortunately, however, no consensus has been reached about how best to understand Kant’s views. To gauge the current state of the debate, consider briefly Hume’s two-fold skeptical attack on causality in his Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding and what strategy Kant is often thought to be pursuing in response in the Critique of Pure Reason.1

Michael Friedman Laws of Nature and Causal Necessity
This paper consider the necessity of causal laws of nature in relation to Kant’s works explicitly addressed to natural science (such as the Prolegomena and the Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science), and also to the second edition of the Transcendental Deduction and the Critique of the Power of Judgement.
متن کاملCausality and Objectivity: The Arguments in Kant’s Second Analogy
Of the philosophical problems that Kant sets out to resolve in the Critique of Pure Reason, one of the foremost is how to justify the principle that, necessarily and universally, all events in the world occur because of an antecedent cause. This problem was, after all, the focal point of Kant’s intellectual engagement with Hume, and it served as an impetus for his transcendental idealist system...
متن کاملKant’s Concepts of Justification
Epistemologists surveying the literature on “Kant’s epistemology” often feel at sea. Even bracketing differences in terminology and emphasis, Kant’s writing about knowledge can seem foreign to the contemporary discussion in a way that, for instance, Hume’s or Reid’s does not. Those working in Kant’s epistemology, on the other hand, dissect with great care his arguments about space and time as t...
متن کاملA Formalization of Kant's Second Formulation of the Categorical Imperative
We present a formalization and computational implementation of the second formulation of Kant’s categorical imperative. This ethical principle requires an agent to never treat someone merely as a means but always also as an end. Here we interpret this principle in terms of how persons are causally affected by actions. We introduce Kantian causal agency models in which moral patients, actions, g...
متن کاملReinventing the Mirror: Reconciling Guyer’s and Allison’s Interpretations of Kant’s Second Analogy
This paper concerns two interpretations of Kant’s second Analogy in the Critique of Pure Reason. On the one hand, Paul Guyer argues that the goal of the second Analogy is to provide grounds for the confirmation of beliefs about causal relations. Henry Allison, on the other hand, argues that the principle of the second Analogy is a condition of the possibility of experiencing succession, whether...
