High energy cosmic-rays: puzzles, models, and giga-ton neutrino telescopes

چکیده

The existence of cosmic rays of energies exceeding 10 eV is one of the mysteries of high energy astrophysics. The spectrum and the high energy to which it extends rule out almost all suggested source models. The challenges posed by observations to models for the origin of high energy cosmic rays are reviewed, and the implications of recent new experimental results are discussed. Large area high energy cosmic ray detectors and large volume high energy neutrino detectors currently under construction may resolve the high energy cosmic ray puzzle, and shed light on the identity and physics of the most powerful accelerators in the universe.

The Extragalactic Neutrino Background Radiations From Blazars and Cosmic Rays

Blazar emission of gamma rays and cosmic ray production of gamma rays in gas-rich clusters have been proposed recently as alternative sources of the high energy extragalactic diffuse gamma ray background radiation. We show that these sources also produce a very different high energy extragalactic diffuse neutrino background radiation. This neutrino background may be detected by the new generati...

Cosmic Rays above the Second Knee from Clusters of Galaxies and Associated High-energy Neutrino Emission

Accretion and merger shocks in clusters of galaxies are potential accelerators of high-energy protons, which can give rise to high-energy neutrinos through pp interactions with the intracluster gas. We discuss the possibility that protons from cluster shocks make a significant contribution to the observed cosmic rays in the energy range between the second knee at ∼ 10 eV and the ankle at ∼ 10 e...

Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray and Neutrino Observations

Recent measurements of ultra-high energy cosmic rays and neutrinos are reviewed. With several new large scale observatories nearing completion or becoming fully operational only very recently, a large body of high quality and high statistics data is growing up now. Already these first data have started to open up a new window to the high energy Universe giving us first direct clues about the or...

High energy neutrino telescopes are multipurpose instruments; their science mission covers astronomy and astrophysics, cosmology, particle physics and cosmic ray physics. Their deployment creates new opportunities for glaciology and oceanography, possibly geology[1]. The observations of astronomers span 19 decades in energy or wavelength, from radio-waves to the high energy gamma rays detected ...

With the discovery of evidence for neutrino mass, a vivid gamma ray sky at multi-TeV energies, and cosmic ray particles with unexpectedly high energies, astroparticle physics currently runs through an era of rapid progress and moving frontiers. The non-vanishing neutrino mass establishes one smooth component of dark matter which does not, however, supply a critical mass to the Universe. Other d...
