Operating charts for continuous sedimentation II: step responses

چکیده

Abstract. The process of continuous sedimentation of particles in a liquid has often been predicted by means of operating charts and mass-balance considerations, where the underlying constitutive assumption is the one by Kynch. Much more complex operating charts (concentration-flux diagrams) can be obtained from a onedimensional model of an ideal continuous clarifier-thickener unit. The engineering concept of ‘optimal operation’ is defined generally as a special type of solution of the model equation, which is a conservation law with a source term and a space-discontinuous flux function. All qualitatively different step responses (with the unit initially in optimal operation in steady state) are presented and classified in terms of operating charts. Quantitative information relating several interesting variables are also presented concerning, for example, the time until overflow occurs as a function of the feed concentration and flux.

Operating Charts for Continuous Sedimentation IV: Limitations for Control of Dynamic Behaviour

Abstract. The nonlinear behaviour of a one-dimensional idealized model of continuous sedimentation has been investigated in this series of papers. The model is a scalar hyperbolic conservation law with space-discontinuous flux function and point source. Parameters in the equation are the two input variables (concentration and flux) and the control variable (a volume flow). The most desired type...

Operating charts for continuous sedimentation III: control of step inputs

Abstract. The main purposes of a clarifier-thickener unit is that it should produce a high underflow concentration and a zero effluent concentration. The main difficulty in the control of the clarification-thickening process (by adjusting a volume flow) is that it is non-linear with complex relations between concentrations and volume flows via the solution of a PDE – a conservation law with a s...

Operating charts for continuous sedimentation I: control of steady states

The industrial process of continuous sedimentation of solid particles in a liquid takes place in a clarifier-thickener unit, which is a large tank with a feed inlet somewhere in the middle and outlets at the top and bottom. For half a century the constitutive assumption by Kynch has provided a platform from which steadystate mass-balance considerations have been used to obtain rules and graphic...

The solids-flux theory--confirmation and extension by using partial differential equations.

The solids-flux theory has been used for half a century as a tool for estimating concentration and fluxes in the design and operation of secondary settling tanks during stationary conditions. The flux theory means that the conservation of mass is used in one dimension together with the batch-settling flux function according to the Kynch assumption. The flux theory results correspond to stationa...

A new chart-independent method for fast identification of control level of industrial processes using continuous data

A new method is developed for a fast identification of the stability situation of industrial processes. The proposed method includes two factor ratios of the control constants for the upper and lower control limits to process these constants. An indication ratio is then defined as the ratio of the maximum data range value to the difference between the maximum and average values for individual d...
