The Equivalence of Tree Adjoining Grammars and Monadic Linear Context-Free Tree Grammars

چکیده
The equivalence of leaf languages of tree adjoining grammars and monadic linear context-free grammars was shown about a decade ago. This paper presents a proof of the strong equivalence of these grammar formalisms. Non-strict tree adjoining grammars and monadic linear context-free grammars define the same class of tree languages. We also present a logical characterisation of this tree language class showing that a tree language is a member of this class iff it is the two-dimensional yield of an MSO-definable threedimensional tree language.

A Direct Link between Tree-Adjoining and Context-Free Tree Grammars
The tree languages of tree-adjoining grammars are precisely those of linear monadic context-free tree grammars. Unlike the original proof, we present a direct transformation of a tree-adjoining grammar into an equivalent linear monadic context-free tree grammar.
متن کاملRestrictions on Monadic Context-Free Tree Grammars
In this paper, subclasses of monadic contextfree tree grammars (CFTGs) are compared. Since linear, nondeleting, monadic CFTGs generate the same class of string languages as tree adjoining grammars (TAGs), it is examined whether the restrictions of linearity and nondeletion on monadic CFTGs are necessary to generate the same class of languages. Epsilonfreeness on linear, nondeleting, monadic CFT...
متن کاملA Generalization of Linear Indexed Grammars Equivalent to Simple Context-Free Tree Grammars
I define a generalization of linear indexed grammars that is equivalent to simple context-free tree grammars in the same way that linear indexed grammars are equivalent to tree-adjoining grammars.
متن کاملSynchronous Context-Free Tree Grammars
We consider pairs of context-free tree grammars combined through synchronous rewriting. The resulting formalism is at least as powerful as synchronous tree adjoining grammars and linear, nondeleting macro tree transducers, while the parsing complexity remains polynomial. Its power is subsumed by context-free hypergraph grammars. The new formalism has an alternative characterization in terms of ...
متن کاملAdjunction As Substitution: An Algebraic Formulation of Regular Context-Free and Tree Adjoining Languages
There have been many attempts to give a coherent formulation of a hierarchical progression that would lead to a refined partition of the vast area stretching from the context-free to the context-sensitive languages. The purpose of this note is to describe a theory that seems to afford a promising method of interpreting the tree adjoining languages as the natural third step in a hierarchy that s...
