Distribution and Abundance of Wolves
نویسندگان
چکیده
At the time wolves were federally protected in the mid-1970’s, Minnesota contained the only known reproducing wolf population in the lower 48 states, except for that on Isle Royale. Over the years, much attention has been focused on studying and monitoring Minnesota’s wolves. Research efforts began in the mid-1930’s (Olson 1938) and with few lapses continue to this day. Efforts to delineate wolf distribution and enumerate populations have also been made at various times over the last 50 years (Erb and DonCarlos 2009).

Does interference competition with wolves limit the distribution and abundance of coyotes?
Interference competition with wolves Canis lupus is hypothesized to limit the distribution and abundance of coyotes Canis latrans, and the extirpation of wolves is often invoked to explain the expansion in coyote range throughout much of North America. We used spatial, seasonal and temporal heterogeneity in wolf distribution and abundance to test the hypothesis that interference competition wit...
متن کاملTrans-Boundary Edge Effects in the Western Carpathians: The Influence of Hunting on Large Carnivore Occupancy
The conservation and management of wolves Canis lupus in the periphery of their distribution is challenging. Edges of wolf distribution are characterized by very few and intermittent occurrences of individuals, which are modulated by multiple factors affecting the overall population such as human-caused mortality, management targets and food availability. The knowledge of population dynamics in...
متن کاملManagement and Conservation Monitoring Gray Wolf Populations Using Multiple Survey Methods
The behavioral patterns and large territories of large carnivores make them challenging to monitor. Occupancy modeling provides a framework for monitoring population dynamics and distribution of territorial carnivores. We combined data from hunter surveys, howling and sign surveys conducted at predicted wolf rendezvous sites, and locations of radiocollared wolves to model occupancy and estimate...
متن کاملIndirect effects and traditional trophic cascades: a test involving wolves, coyotes, and pronghorn.
The traditional trophic cascades model is based on consumer resource interactions at each link in a food chain. However, trophic-level interactions, such as mesocarnivore release resulting from intraguild predation, may also be important mediators of cascades. From September 2001 to August 2004, we used spatial and seasonal heterogeneity in wolf distribution and abundance in the southern Greate...
متن کاملCamera Traps on Wildlife Crossing Structures as a Tool in Gray Wolf (Canis lupus) Management - Five-Years Monitoring of Wolf Abundance Trends in Croatia
The conservation of gray wolf (Canis lupus) and its coexistence with humans presents a challenge and requires continuous monitoring and management efforts. One of the non-invasive methods that produces high-quality wolf monitoring datasets is camera trapping. We present a novel monitoring approach where camera traps are positioned on wildlife crossing structures that channel the animals, thereb...
