Abstract This report summarizes some of the approximation-theoretic and numerical issues encountered in solving operator equations oft he form Lu = f. Particular emphasis is placed on Galerkin and finite element approximations using multiwavelets. Examples are used to illustrate some of the issues.

This paper gives an overview of recent achievements of the multiwavelet theory. The construction of multiwavelets is based on a multiresolution analysis with higher multiplicity generated by a scaling vector.
