چکیده

A system of polymers dissolved in liquid crystal is studied in the isotropic phase. A mean eld theory is proposed which undergoes spontaneous breaking of the rotational symmetry and reduces to the theory of polymer nematics. In order to eliminate closed loops of polymers from entering into the theory, the polymers are replicated n times and then n is taken to zero similarly to the procedures of de Gennes and Des Cloizeaux. The transition is rst order, and the presence of the polymers shifts the critical point down, in agreement with physical expectations. The eeect of polymer-polymer interactions is discussed.

Investigation into the temperature dependence of isotropic- nematic phase transition of Gay- Berne liquid crystals

Density functional approach was used to study the isotropic- nematic (I-N) transition and calculate the values of freezing parameters of the Gay- Berne liquid crystal model. New direct and pair correlation functions of a molecular fluid with Gay- Berne pair potential were used. These new functions were used in density functional theory as input to calculate the isotropic- nematic transition den...

Optically switchable gratings based on azo-dye-doped, polymer-dispersed liquid crystals.

We report a holographically fabricated, optically switchable grating using azo-dye-doped, polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (LCs). Our experiments show that upon photoirradiation, the diffraction of the grating was decreased significantly. We believe that this switching behavior is due to two factors--nematic-isotropic phase transition of LCs and thermal expansion of the grating structure.

Long - range Casimir interactions between impurities in ne - matic liquid crystals and the collapse of polymer chains in such solvents

Long-range Casimir interactions between impurities in ne-matic liquid crystals and the collapse of polymer chains in such solvents Abstract. – The elastic interactions between objects embedded in a nematic liquid crystal are usually caused by the average distorsion—rather than by the fluctuations—of the nematic ori-entational field. We argue that for sufficiently small particles, the nematic-me...

Identification of nonmonotonic behaviors and stick-slip transition in liquid crystal polymers.

The recent identification of shear-induced phases in the isotropic melts of liquid crystal polymers shows that these materials are expected to display original nonlinear behaviors. We have investigated the flow behavior of a nematic sidechain polymer above its isotropic-nematic transition temperature. Nonlinear rheology and birefringence measurements indicate the appearance, above a critical sh...

Magnetic-field-induced changes of the isotropic-nematic phase transition in side-chain polymer liquid crystals.

The isotropic-nematic (I-N) phase transition of side-chain polymer liquid crystals is intrinsically a weak first-order transition with a biphasic region spread over a wide temperature interval. In the presence of high magnetic fields we find the I-N transition to become a strong first order. The I-N biphasic region shrinks its temperature window as larger magnetic fields are applied, until it c...
