Impact–generated activity period of the asteroid 7968 Elst–Pizarro in 1996: Identification of the asteroid 427 Galene as the most probable parent body of the impactors

چکیده
One of the most interesting objects among the small bodies in the Solar System is the intermediate object 7968 Elst– Pizarro classified as an asteroid–comet orbiting in the Themis region of the main belt, which showed a temporary dust tail activity in 1996. The impact-induced processes generated by multiple collisions with a debris cloud associated with another asteroid, are the preferred explanations for this activity. A computer search has shown that the most probable candidate for the parent body of the impactors to generate this temporary outburst activity, is the field asteroid 427 Galene.

The Strange Case of 133p/elst-pizarro: a Comet among the Asteroids
We present a new investigation of the comet-asteroid transition object 133P/(7968) Elst-Pizarro. We find mean optical colors (B V = 0.69 0.02, V R = 0.42 0.03, R I = 0.27 0.03) and a phase-darkening coefficient ( = 0.044 0.007 mag deg 1) that are comparable both to other comet nuclei and to C-type asteroids. As in 1996, when this object’s comet-like activity was first noted, data from 2002 show...
متن کاملThe Hawaii trails project: comet-hunting in the main asteroid belt
Context. The mysterious solar system object 133P/(7968) Elst-Pizarro is dynamically asteroidal, yet displays recurrent comet-like dust emission. Two scenarios were hypothesized to explain this unusual behavior: (1) 133P is a classical comet from the outer solar system that has evolved onto a main-belt orbit, or (2) 133P is a dynamically ordinary main-belt asteroid on which subsurface ice has re...
متن کاملThe Lifetime of Ice on Main Belt Asteroids
We theoretically estimate the loss rate of buried ice from spherical bodies 2Y3.3 AU from the Sun. The loss rate is explored as a function of about a dozen parameters. We introduce the concept of a ‘‘buried snow line,’’ where the loss of ice is sufficiently slow over the age of the solar system. For a dusty surface layer, ice can persist within the top few meters of the surface over billions of ...
متن کاملActive Asteroids: Mystery in the Main Belt
Classically, comets from the outer solar system (beyond the orbit of Neptune), are expected to be icy, and thus active near the Sun, while asteroids in the inner solar system (interior to the orbit of Jupiter) are expected to be relatively ice-deficient, and thus inert. Studies of anomalous objects, most recently 133P/Elst-Pizarro, challenge this classical picture, however, and suggest that eit...
متن کاملEvidence from polymict ureilite meteorites for a disrupted and re-accreted single ureilite parent asteroid gardened by several distinct impactors
Ureilites are ultramafic achondrites that exhibit heterogeneity in mg# and oxygen isotope ratios between different meteorites. Polymict ureilites represent near-surface material of the ureilite parent asteroid(s). Electron microprobe analyses of >500 olivine and pyroxene clasts in several polymict ureilites reveal a statistically identical range of compositions to that shown by unbrecciated ure...
