Factive Presuppositions, Accommodation and Information Structure
نویسنده
چکیده
There are three ways to refer to a fact from the complement of a factive verb: 1) via abstract object anaphoric reference, or, with a full sentential complement that will be interpreted either 2) as a bound presupposition or 3) as triggering a presupposition of a fact that will have to be accommodated. Spoken corpus examples reveal that these three possibilities differ in relation to the type of information they tend to contribute, and this has two effects. First, the information status of the fact and its role in the discourse seem to affect the preference for one construction over another in a particular context. Second, presupposed factive complements that need to be accommodated tend to be hearer-new and the focus of the utterance, meaning that information structure seems to contribute to the felicity of accommodation of presupposed facts.

Presupposition or Abstract Object Anaphora?: Constraints on Choice of Factive Complements in Spoken Discourse
Using results from an empirical study of factives in spoken English, a comparison is made between factive verbs and their presupposed complements, both bound and accommodated, and their non-presupposing alternatives: abstract object anaphora that derive an antecedent from a discourse-given linguistic expression. The role of discourse structural constraints and grounding in choice of expression ...
متن کاملThe Accommodation Potential of Implicative Verbs
We present an analysis of implicative verbs, complementtaking verbs which induce entailment-like inferences, but which are also claimed to trigger presuppositions. What is presupposed, however, is much more variable than with e.g. factive verbs. Sketching a formal treatment in Logical Description Grammar we consider the role of pragmatic reasoning and accommodation in deriving these presupposit...
متن کاملAdpositions and presuppositions
This paper looks at presuppositions of adpositions, a topic which has not been examined much, in spite of the very large body of work on presuppositions. Some earlier assertions about adpositional presuppositions turn out not to be relevant, because (1) they are incorrect (2) presuppose and/or presupposition are not used in a technical sense in them, or (3) the presuppositions involved are not ...
متن کاملOn Factive Islands: Pragmatic Anomaly vs. Pragmatic Infelicity
Certain types of wh-phrases (e.g. how, why) cannot be extracted from the complement clause of a factive predicate, nor can they occur in situ within it (the factive island effect). This paper argues that the factive island effect is a pragmatic phenomenon, which follows from two independent factors: (i) the speaker’s expectation about possible answers of wh-interrogatives, and (ii) presuppositi...
متن کاملVeridicity
This paper addresses the problem of assessing the veridicity of textual content. Has an event mentioned in the text really occurred? Who is the source of the information? What is the stance of the author of the text? Does the author indicate whether he believes the source? We will survey some of linguistic conventions that indicate the author’s commitment, or the lack thereof, to the propositio...
