Presuppositional variance and aspectual meaning

چکیده
Information structure is normally considered to be orthogonal to the syntaxsemantics interface. However, in this paper, I argue that aspectual operators in Russian, notably the imperfective aspect with complete event interpretations, are sensitive to information structure. My goal is to show how the imperfective aspect can be used either to assert or presuppose the existence of a complete event of the type described by the VP, without positing ambiguity of the aspectual operator. In a compositional framework, this implies that we need something like a -partitioning already at the VP-level, which is input to the aspectual operator. I also suggest how this combined approach to aspect and information structure could be extended to account for aspectual usage in nondeclarative sentences.

Information structure and aspectual competition
The imperfective aspect in Russian competes with the perfective in referring to events whose existence is entailed by the input context. In the first, major part of the paper (sections 1-5) I take a global view on aspectual competition, which is analyzed in light of various pragmatic constraints. It is shown in a bidirectional optimization how the default/unmarked imperfective in the appropriat...
متن کاملPresuppositional Indexicals
Kaplanian, two-dimensional theories secure rigidity for indexicals by positing special contexts and semantic mechanisms reserved only for indexicals. The result is a deep and unexplained chasm between expressions that depend on the extra-linguistic context and expressions that depend on the discourse context. Theories that treat indexicals as anaphoric, presuppositional expressions (e.g. Hunter...
متن کاملContexts and Propositions
This paper concerns itself with the relation between two important semantic notions: the traditional notion of proposition and a more recent notion of context as an information state. The notion of proposition has traditionally played an important role in the theory of meaning: propositions are entities that have independent truth conditions and act as the meaning of both independent and embedd...
متن کاملDefining Propositional Similarity Systemizing identification of presuppositional binding
When can we say that two propositions in a spoken dialogue are similar enough that the one can function as an antecedent for the other? This study looks at the problem of determining meaning equivalence or meaning relatedness in spoken utterances taken from the London-Lund Corpus of Spoken English. Propositions judged to be equivalent or extremely similar in meaning were categorized according t...
متن کاملON THE SYSTEMATIC ASPECT OF IDIOMS Martha
ON THE SYSTEMATIC ASPECT OF IDIOMS Martha McGinnis University of Calgary It has traditionally been assumed that the meaning of some or all phrasal idioms is noncompositional. However, I will argue here that the aspectual meaning of idioms is completely systematic: there are no special aspectual restrictions on idioms, and moreover, the aspect of an idiom is compositional, combining the aspectua...
