Interpreting the Past through Agent-Based Modeling and GIS

چکیده
The past decade has seen archaeology taking an increasingly high interest in agent-based modeling (ABM). ABM’s emerging popularity is due to its ability to model individuals and societies, readily incorporate any geospatial data available, and encompass uncertainty inherent in archaeological theories or findings. Indeed, the unpredictability of interaction patterns within a simulated agent society, along with the strong possibility of emergent behavior, can help researchers gain new insights into existing theories; or even come up with completely novel explanations and paradigms regarding the ancient societies being studied. Agent-based modeling is thus a potentially powerful tool, which can be used to assess the plausibility of alternative hypotheses regarding ancient civilizations, their social organization, and social and environmental processes which might have existed. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview on ABM and corresponding methodologies, and present examples of recent work that has applied geospatial agent-based models in archaeology.

The Study of CO Symptoms' Impacts on Individuals, Using GIS and Agent-based Modeling (ABM)
The purpose of this study is to use both agent-based modeling as a new method in modeling dynamic phenomena and GIS to show the effects of carbon monoxide (CO) on individuals in the city of Tehran. After collecting the latest information about the severity of carbon monoxide pollutants on different days, one of the days with a very high severity of this pollutant has been selected for investiga...

متن کاملA review of agent-based modeling (ABM) concepts and some of its main applications in management science
We live in a very complex world where we face complex phenomena such as social norms and new technologies. To deal with such phenomena, social scientists often use reductionism approach where they reduce them to some lower-lever variables and model the relationships among them through a scheme of equations. This approach that is called equation based modeling (EBM) has some basic weaknesses in ...
متن کامل'Situating' Simulation to Model Human Spatio-Temporal Interactions: An Example Using Crime Events
Many social phenomena have a spatio-temporal dimension and involve dynamic decisions made by individuals. In the past, researchers have often turned to geographic information systems (GIS) to model these interactions. Although GIS provide a powerful tool for examining the spatial aspects of these interactions, they are unable to model the dynamic, individual-level interactions across time and s...
متن کامل02 Residential Electricity Demand Management Through Tariff Structure: Agent-based Modeling
Recently, imbalances in the electricity production and consumption in Iran, have caused critical situations at specific times of the year; meanwhile, the residential sector, with a 51 percent share, is the main reason for peak demand crisis. According to the international experiences, it can be hoped that by revising the residential electricity tariff structure, consumption pattern in this sect...
